I spent 43 years fending off lake effect snow storms on the Lake Erie coast
near Cleveland. I will never repeat that again!

Good ol' Lake Superior. We were traveling around Thunder Bay and northern
Minnesota. We had to stop driving. There was NO visibility. So Crash
got out of the car, laid in the middle of the highway, and made snow
angels.

Hey Carol, be careful posting any ebay auctions on newsgroups. This one
seems to be ok but you never know who's lurking. Some people are really
****y about this. One complaint is enough to get your ebay account shut
down

BTW you have some really neat things listed. Did all the recipe books
go? If not are you going to relist? I was going to bid then got busy
and had to go out.

2 small problems with my bidding:

1. I never buy eBay.
2. I have never agreed with a postman's holiday concept.

Heck we get those all the time in the winter. The driveway has to be
plowed out and life stops for a day or two except for those fools who
have to try and get to the store for milk or beer. Those are good days
to make a nice pot of chili or chicken noodle soup and enjoy. Even
better is a large baked potato smothered with chili sauce I can a
batch of chili sauce each year just for that purpose. One nice thing
about snow storms is at least you don't have to cut the grass or wack
mosquitoes. I think it's been to hot for mosquitoes this year as we
haven't had many. With the West Nile threat that might be a good thing.

There are 2 common expressions a postman's holiday and a busman's holiday.

Basically the definition is using part of your vacation as you avocation. In
the case of a postman (who used to walk their routs) it would entail going for a
hike or walk on his day off. For a bus driver it would mean going for a drive.

I love it here when we get Lake effect storms. The road virtually shuts
down. It is so nice a quiet. DH and I will start out making a snow man
and sometimes snow angels but it usually ends up being a snowball fight.
Then we come in for hot chocolate. At night once the storm lets up we
like to venture out and watch the stars. Walking in the storm is fun
too. At my age I still like to catch snow flakes on my tongue. I don't
mind the snow storms at all. What I do mind is the drivers who for
whatever reason don't take winter road conditions into consideration.

Hey, never ever let the kid in you die! I say go out and make snow
angels this winter. You will be so glad you did. The fun and laughter
is well worth it and a lot cheaper than therapy. When's the last time
you had a snowball fight? Do it this winter too. Follow up with hot
chocolate and marshmallows. For a twist and more grownup taste try
Carnation's After Eight Hot Chocolate. That is really good stuff. I've
even stirred a tsp into my morning coffee for a nice taste.

I've made that mistake too.... bated = abated.

m-w.com
Inflected Form(s): bat·ed; bat·ing
Etymology: Middle English, short for abaten to abate
transitive senses
1 : to reduce the force or intensity of : RESTRAIN <with bated breath>
2 : to take away : DEDUCT
3 archaic : to lower especially in amount or estimation
4 archaic : BLUNT
intransitive senses, obsolete : DIMINISH, DECREASE

Damsel, we'll form a gang of two that spells it the "other" way.
Soon, due to our unrelenting use of it, our meaning for baited will be
in the dictionary as an alternative spelling.

I lived in a green zone off Lake Michigan for the first 16 years of my
life. We knew we got more snowfall in those days, but no one bothered
to call it "the lake effect".

http://www.islandnet.com/~see/weathe...s/lkefsnw3.htm

When I was looking this up, one site talked about thunder snowstorms -
something I've never heard of. Do you get them?

> If we have our way, there'll be no more snow period!
>

I clearly remember the year there was absolutely NO snow.... a last
big puffy flakes of snow began to fall near sunset on xmas eve. When
I woke up xmas morning everything was right with the world - snow was
everywhere and pretty deep too. The only problem was the snow wasn't
heavy enough yet to stick together enough to make snowballs or
snowmen.

Of course, I was cursing the snow along with everyone else as soon as
I had to shovel it.

At least Crash had an ounce of sense. I remember driving (against my
better judgement) in a zero visibility snowstorm going up to Lake
Tahoe. Hubby insisted on continuing even though we couldn't see 2
feet in front of us... eventually we ended up in a snowbank. Thank
goodness the snowbank was there, because it was a curve he didn't see
and there was a 300 foot drop on the other side of of the bank.

That cured him.

If you monitor the ebay ng you will see how often this happens. A few
of them as well as lurkers like to complain just to see if they can get
another seller pulled We've been on ebay for five or six years now.
We don't do much in the summer because we have so many other things on
the go. Another thing that can get your account shut down is
solicitating feedback so make sure you never ask or mention feedback in
any of your correspondence with other ebayers.

Heck yes! We have a tradition of steak and lobster for New Year's Day
dinner. A few years ago right when DH was starting up the grill it was
lightening and then it started snowing. It's really neat.

We had a tornado touch down about a mile from us when I was a kid. Then
a tornado touched down a few miles from us about 8 yrs ago just after we
had moved into that house. We weren't even unpacked. The streets
flooded and cars were stalled everywhere because some drivers seem to
think their cars double as boats. I took it as an omen the house was
not meant to be so we moved to this house a few years back. A few days
after we moved here another tail end of a tornado went through. There
were several branches down but no real damage and no flooding. After
the storm we were rewarded with a really nice rainbow so I took it as a
good omen this is the house for us

I used to like snow days for a preverted reason. The teachers had to
come anyway if the school was open so I went. It was nice and peaceful.
I could pick their brains and enjoy my time in the library. The
principle would let us roller skate the hallways too. It was a lot more
fun going to school those days than staying home. My mom only believed
in tv long enough to watch Lawrence Welk and we only got 4 channels on
good days with the rabbit ears. A neighbour always put in an ice rink
so that was fun but on snow days he usually wasn't home to clear the
ice. He was out clearing snow.

I'm not sure because some of these complainers are really ****y. Check
ebay's TOS and follow them to a t. I think you can get away with a sig
that includes your ebay name but no auctions. Then some of these ****y
people will still complain. I know you can use this method for email
without a problem. It's the newsgroup thing that's the problem If
she has your email addys then she could send out a nice email telling
everyone what she is offering with a link. That's legal by ebay
standards.

You obviously live near a lake. You may not have to cut the grass or wack
mosquitoes, but you still have to shovel the snow, unless you live in an
apartment.

I can't shovel snow. Tried last winter, to help Jim. Even w/ the snow
blower it just wipes me out. Jim is tired of it all. After all he was
raised
in London, England and never grew up with it.

So, the plan is, we retire at the end of next month and move to our new(to
us)
place. Work out our finances and hopefully we can go south for 6 months
in January. Rio Grande here we come!

It only takes one ****y ebayer to stop that. According to ebay's TOS
solicitating feedback can get your account cancelled. I know it works
because I had one seller that was really aggressive about feedback. Her
service wasn't good at taking more than a month for the product. Her
communication was horrid and then she started bombarding me with demands
for feedback. I preferred to leave no feedback which really says a lot
sometimes but only to the seller. After several very nasty demanding
feedback emails I decided to forward them to ebay. She isn't a seller
any more. Seriously though read ebay's TOS. Solicitating feedback is a
sure fire way of getting your account closed down.

There used to be a time that ebay was fun. Now it's loaded with testy
people and testier lukers on newsgroups. They relish in complaining to
ebay then you have to deal with testy buyers or sellers. We've been on
there 5 - 6 years and the atmosphere has changed. We have a very good
feedback none of it asked for. We leave appropriate feedback but will
admit to being cautious on leaving negative feedback because of
undeserved retalitory feedback. On our end autions are paid for the day
we win them or at the latest the next day and auctions sold are sent
within 2 days. That still isn't good enough for some ebayers. Then
ebay upped their fees too so selling costs more. They really aren't
encouraging for the little buyer

your experience?

Closest I have to that now is the Williams-Sonoma Pasta Sauce book. And
their Pizza book.

We live right on the water with access to two lakes. Shovelling snow is
not something we do. The driveway is plowed out if need be. The
sidewalk doesn't need shovelling because the town does it with this cute
little covered tractor thing. We are one house away from the end of the
sidewalk anyway so it isn't a big deal. No one uses it.

DH grandparents lived in Cleveland, Ohio. For years they spent the
winter months in Florida and the summer months in Ohio. He's now passed
on but she's still going strong. She makes the best chicken soup you
ever tasted. Mine is good because I learned from her but hers is still
better!

Ok, I want the Pasta Sauce book. I can pay echeck by Pay Pal. Are you
relisting or private auction or do you want to do a private deal? I
know private deals are against ebay policies but I've already chatted
with you and crash so it's ok as long as it's ok with you. Shipping is
to a US address. Let me know.

I'm a grandparent. My youngest is 5 and the eldest is 24.

I love Canada, but I hate the snow and cold. It just wreaks havoc with my
body.

I just cooked up a couple of chickens, froze stock for 2 more meals and made
a sort of chicken a laking, my own recipe.

Goes good over rice or pasta.

Ebay is a godsend if you're missing something of a set - no way to find
it halfway across the country. It saves SO much time, I can't tell
you! It also is a wonderful source of unique gifts for someone you
know is a collector of whatever. I bless the day I found Ebay. It is
no more addictive--unless you have an addictive personality--than
anything else. Now, me, I never watch QVC or any other shopping
channel. LOL.

LOL! You must have been a big city girl. We had 2 channels even in
the '60's. Do you remember Liberace and Korla Pandit's 15 minute
programs (one show followed the other)?

I guess they need to be tough, but ouch (!)... not even as part of a
sig line? Good thing you gave her a heads up.

I had not thought of Ebay to replace some pieces from my dinnerware.
I have replaced some crystal items thanks to Ebay and will have a look
for my plates.
