Default REC: My Favorite Sloppy Joes

I needed a quick meal for tonight and thought of these that I haven't made
for quite a while. We had them with coleslaw and potato chips, and
finished off with a couple of Barb's brownies.

I have a question. Why do you use butter or olive oil to saute' the
vegs instead of using the meat drippings?

Thanks,
Bob

I've found that chili-garlic paste is a great thing in
sloppy joes. You might try substituting it for the chili
sauce some time, though the different brands vary
considerably in heat.

I threw this recipe together years ago, Bob, and I think my reasoning at
the time was to reduce the beef fat. I'm sure it doesn't really matter
what fat is used as it isn't really that much.

Cheers,
Wayne

That sounds like a nice variation. Thanks, Mike, I'll give it a try.

Oh man! I've got 4 lbs. of ground beef in the freezer and 1 lb. of it is
just begging for sloppy joes! Thanks for setting off a craving!

White bread will work in a pinch if it's not too fresh. You just make
"fold overs" and eat twice as many of 'em. HTH :-)

No white bread in my house... I don't think a baguette will work Nor the
rosemary bread I bought. Buns it will have to be. Wonder, even

Sloppy Joes do taste best on squishy white buns. Now, they are still
good over cornbread in a pinch.

Hey, I never thought of cornbread. I bet that's good, although I agree about
the squisy white buns.

Oddly enough, last night I made sloppy joes for the first time in years. (I
used the James Beard "American Cookery" recipe.) I only had some old hot
dog rolls in the freezer, but my daughter preferred tortilla chips. She
scooped up the meat like it was a dip.

Next time I'll try some cornbread, too.

I make sloppy Joes, in the style of the chilliburgers/chilliFries from
those greasy spoon Greek restaurants, except I use less chilli powder.
(don't need the heartburn) Kinda a thickish hamburger tomato sauce chilli
mess. Tastes great!

Sounds good to me. Here's my recipe:

Sloppy Joes

1 lb. ground beef
tomato catsup
1-2 Tbsp brown sugar
1-2 Tbsp vinegar
cinnamon (to taste)
minced onion
chopped green pepper
minced celery (just a little for sweetness) -- or celery seed

Brown meat and onions until no longer pink. Add green pepper and celery.
Break up the meat Add catsup until mixture has enough sauce. Just a shake
or two of cinnamon really wakes things up. Add vinegar and brown sugar. If
you wish, you can add proportionally more brown sugar and vinegar a
tablespoon at a time.

Try it over baked potatoes or rice sometime, too.
