albeit on a small scale.
The intimate, full service health food store I've been managing for 2 years on this tiny little barrier island has been taken over by a discounter. The fresh Organic Produce - Gone The only organic vegetarian deli on the Island - including soups, salads, sandwiches, fresh vegie juices and pure food smoothies - Gone The specialty health and body care items our locals and tourists have come to depend on - Gone. The herbal apothecary including a vast and wonderful liquid extract selection and teas - Gone Homeopathy - Gone Replaced by discount Vitamins and Groceries. A warehouse store. They even blocked the Chi by installing fixtures in the front window. No one can see in, no one can see out. No more Juice Bar where folks gathered to discuss Island goings on, world matters, music or anything else that came to mind. No more tables and chairs for tourists to drink their water or nosh on snacks in between Island activities. No more incense, aromatherapy, candles, wind chimes, artwork and spiritually oriented greeting cards. My heart is breaking. Ellen |

>oriented greeting cards. I've seen those: new-agey illustrations of nordic-looking nymphs surrounded by clouds or seafoam. Printed on card-stock claimed to be 100% post-consumer recycled which, when analyzed, turns out to be 80% virgin pulp. Yes, I'll miss 'em too! |

See if your business can stand on it's own two feet. Start small (ie hire a stall in your local market) and make sure you're selling items and services that the big discount store isn't... that way, they can't undercut you. -- Use Linux - Computer power for the people: Down with cybercrud... |

This could be the time to try your hand at owning instead of managing... I'm going to miss the healthfood store down the street from me when I move. It's not cheap but boy is it ever convenient to have organic vegies and natural products a 10 minute walk from my door! -- ~Karen AKA Kajikit Lover of shiny things... Don't you just hate it when that happens? I've gone through such things a few times. Now I guess I should be relatively happy that my current small HFS has ONLY decided to do away with the grocery section and sell used clothes instead. -- Jean B. |
