Default auto-shift in crockpots

I have an old 4 quart Hamilton Beach "Crock Watcher" and misplaced the
manual. Can anyone tell me exactly what the "auto-shift" setting does? I
realize that it starts high and then at some point shifts to low. But is it
okay to use when a recipe calls for cooking a certain number of hours at the
low setting? If so, why even have a lot setting? Thanks for any
information.
