Default A small good

In the face of the disaster in New Orleans and the central Gulf Coast,
I suspect I'm not alone in feeling helpless. I've given some things
to some of the evacuees who landed here in Cow Hill, but not enough to
make a real difference. But last night I learned that a young woman
from one of the colleges in New Orleans has just enrolled in our
school for the current semester.

Well, she needs clothes and just about everything else, and -- aha! --
she's the same size D was before her diet. There's a leather coat
that will never fit D again just a-hanging in the closet, and there's
a lot of other stuff, too. AND a friend in California sent a check
for a hundred bucks to us for the local evacuees. While they will
surely need help for weeks to come, the newest student in town seems
like a better choice. We got us a plan, y'all. We don't have the
ability to do a lot, but we can do this. Yes we can. We're gonna
pick somebody and make things better for her.

OBFood: Chicken thighs for dinner tonight. I'll tuck Tom Colicchio's
lemon confit and some herbs under the skin. Then I'll grill 'em up.

In the midst of family crises of my own, I made paper airplanes for the
little evacuees whilst recently in Austin, Texas. One family lost
everything. We talked a lot about how to make gumbo, the smell of fresh
bread baking and hope.
I grilled a pork tenderloin, liberally smeared with fresh squashed garlic,
OO, chipotle powder, cumin and kosher salt. Served with rice and fresh
tomatoes. And a sprinkle of dried oregano over all. Easy-peasy.

(snip great story) That's great, Michael, how nice that you see where
your money is going and that it's really helping someone out. And not
only was it a good deed, but one that took more effort than sticking a
check in the mail. I'm a lazy write out a check person, but really, I
don't know what else to do. I can only hope it goes to help out.

Not at all, Nancy. It's a matter of geography as much as anything.
We're closer to the disaster than you are and so have the opportunity
to contact some of the evacuees personally. The university PR machine
gave us the idea, by the way.

It almost certainly will. But I can imagine a clearing house of
victims and donors -- in a more perfect world than this one. A
clearing house that matched needs to willingness to give so that you
and others like you could help specific people with specific aid. We
are a nation of hundreds of millions, and most of us want to help.

Anyhow, writing a check is also a good thing in the face of all that
suffering and loss.
