Default Favorite kitchen Gadgets?

While I realize that most relationships with "new" kitchen gadgets are
at best fleeting affairs, I believe my Hamilton Grill and I are going to
end up having a long term, permanent relationship. ;-)

Anyone else fall in love with a kitchen gadget?

Cheers!

Presto salad shooter. I've never used it for salads but I use it to grate
cheese. I have had it for years and have replaced the cheese grating cone
once.

My wand or stick blender and my V-slicer hold a piece of my heart. My
micro-planer used to... but I use it so rarely that we've drifted apart.

Wonder if it'd work for grating fresh ginger root?

I just love my garlic press. I can't dice garlic finely enough to
disperse it evenly throughout a dish, and I haven't mastered the smash
it with a knife trick. My garlic press does the job!

Haven't mastered that? I know it's kind of tough.
Sort of like boiling water. :-)

I use my salad shooter for salad. Find my cordless cheese grater better for
cheese. It's great cause I have little strength in my hands.

Not gadgets, but Ed bought me two Wusthof (sp?) knives some years back (a
bird's eye and a tomato slicer), and I don't go near a tomato without them.

I might just have to try another one. I never did like them...
I grate garlic cloves on a fine cheese grater.

What kind do you have?

I've never seen an electric cheese grater?

I use my rotary grater/slicer for cheese, and for shredding carrots and
stuff.

Serrated tomato slicers are nice and I used to use one...

until I bought my oriental knife. :-)
That think holds an edge like you would not believe!
Gods help me if I ever get my finger under it (so far that's not
happened!).

I can literally slice tomato paper thin with that thing.

I'll have to google for yours. I'm curious now!

Thing is, my knife drawer is pretty full. <lol>

It's just some nothing brand from the grocery store. It's nice,
though -- rinses clean beautifully. I don't even peel the garlic,
just drop it in the press and give it a squeeze.

Bread machine. I have more types and kinds of flours and inclusions
than I know what to do with, and merrily add them to each and every
loaf. Only one flop, and I tossed that book.

Just got a yogurt maker. If it works good, I'll be in love with that
too.

Ditto on the breadmaker. Fleishman's has a nice recipe book for
breadmaking. Now is the perfect time of the year to make apple bread.
It has chunks of apples in it with a nice mild spicy flavour. If you
want the recipe, I can post it for you. I make more tomato bread this
time of year too just by adding cherry tomatoes and fresh basil to a
basic white bread recipe. This is out of necessity since my plants are
overflowing in tomatoes!

I've had a Salton yogurt maker for years. It's the kind with the little
jars. I use it quite a bit.

My number one favourite small kitchen gadget is a small handheld rotary
cheese grater that I use mainly for grating parmesan cheese. My number
one favourite large kitchen gadget is my 22 L Mirro pressure canner.
The number one gadget I would never buy is an electric can opener. I
went through a couple of them before buying a good hand operated one.

Hey these things are awesome! The kids got us one for Christmas last
year. Ours is black and brushed stainless steel. It came with a little
stand so the whole unit sits on our counter in front of a couple of
bottles of wine. It does work as promised with virtually no effort. DD
& DSIL as well as DS are into wines much more than we are. Apparently
the easy open wines with screw caps are not quite up to their standards
Because of this we have been learning quite a bit about wines and
how to cook with wines. I have a couple of whites, reds, and one blush
that I now like to use for cooking.

Ah, so that's the secret behind your prolific food preservation efforts!
Fueled by vino! (smile) I just have your usual two handle jobbers to
open wine.

I used one a friend had found cheap when I visited one time - a copy, not
the original make. He'd had it for a good while and used it often. It still
worked perfectly and looked like new. I decided I wanted one. I was bought
one of the cheaper copies similar to his (about what, £15 or so for the
'kit' including foil cutter, stand and quite decent case, as well as spare
screw part just in case ?!?) last year as a gift. I love it! It's been used
heaps since we love our wine and I love to drink, and it is in perfect
condition. Gadgets like these are often all hype and marketing, but no use
or substance. not this one by a long shot IMO. Oh, they say 3 seconds - more
like 1.5 to 2 seconds for me when I'm thirsty, and it never ever mangles a
cork either, not even very crap, poor quality corks.

If you ever get a chance to check one out I'd say do so - seems daft, but
they're fun because they work so well!

YUP! In fact if anything, the blurb doesn't do the fact justice.

Here's an old corkscrew you don't see everyday. I remember Pop used it on
occasion. No clue how old it is.

I love my teeny-tiny kitchenaid food processor---chops my onions and
peppers in about 3 seconds.

That's really neat ... corkscrews would make a nice
collection, wouldn't they?

I used to have one that worked on what seems to
be a similar way ... a plastic bulb type handle with
a corkscrew on the bottom, you'd screw it into the
cork, when the plastic top hit the corkscrew, keep
screwing and it would pull the cork up into the
handle.

Sorry for the torturous description. As an aside, I
also really liked the vacuum wine bottle thingy to keep
it from going stale in the refrigerator.
