Can navy beans go bad between being made into soup on Sunday and being
eaten on Tuesday? The soup has been refrigerated the whole time during the interim. The reason I ask is, I had a bowl of leftover soup today. Tonight, my waist measurement has to be approaching 80 inches, and Crash tells me I'm burping methane. It ain't pretty. Is it likely the soup, or should I be looking elsewhere for the cause of this? Whatever it is, I don't want a repeat of tonight's performance. Thanks, Carol, having "Goodyear" tattooed on her belly |

Unless the soup tasted bad, its just your body's inability to digest
the carbs in the beans. If the soup was good, get yourself a bottle of Beano, or add meat tenderizer to the beans when you cook them. Beans beans they're good for your heart the more you eat the more you fart. If you can stand the methane breath(or if Crash can), the beans act like little fatmops, sucking up the fat in your arteries and whisking it away. maxine in ri |

Made a bean, lentil and ham soup not long ago on a weekend and left a bowl full, covered on the side in the kitchen for nearly 2 days - we just forgot. Anyhow, came to clean up, found it, lifted the cover, as I was inhaling. I just got to the yard fast enough to not puke all the hell over the kitchen floor, then Kath came in and saw me heaving and nearly puked all over the kitchen herself. Gotta be one of the most foul rotten stenches I've smelled/tasted in quite a long time. Sounds like yours hadn't gone near that far though! Shaun aRe |

You know, Carol, that's why I tend to shy away from making pots of bean soup, the leftovers get all thick and icky looking. Luckily it's pretty cheap so you don't lose a lot in tossing the leftovers. nancy |

This seems very unlikely. I would expect the beans to be good for 5-7 days, at least on their own. It may be that whatever you have in the soup with the beans may have done something? > > The reason I ask is, I had a bowl of leftover soup today. I'd look elsewhere or consider if you have consumed something that is interacting with the beans. |

Seriously I doubt the beans were off that quick but I might suspect one of the other ingredients like ham. The reason for this is we bought pizza from a new establishment a couple of weeks ago. DH had gas & bloating, I had those symptoms as well as nausea and the runs. My stomach is fairly sensitive so at the time we didn't attribute it to the pizza. This past weekend the kids were home so we ordered 2 pizzas one with ham and one without from this place again as well as wings & hot sauce. Out of 8 of us, 6 had symptoms including the gas, bloating, nausea, and runs. That is too much of a co-incidence. The only things in common all of us ate was pizza with sausage & ham. The only ones problem free were the 2 that didn't eat the ham pizza so I'm thinking the ham was bad or it could possibly be that that particular pizza picked up some contaminants from the counter. I'd still suspect the ham. |

Ham added while cooking will have no effect like this. The boiling will sterilize the whole business. I'd say look elsewhere for the causes of that bloating. A bit of "post hoc, propter hoc" reasoning. After this, therefore, because of this. And if it were fermenting, a return to a boil for a few minutes would have eliminated it. Pastorio |

I'm a knowledgeably guy generally, not to mention I studied microbiology for a while some time ago... mind you most of my study time was taken up with the burning of plant matter and inhaling the resultant smoke... so... yeah, best forget about what I can't remember, heheheheh... I only mentioned the bowl of rancid stuff by way of an example of how fast these kinds of things can turn nasty... REAL nasty... heheheh... CHEERS! Shaun aRe |

Thanks everyone! The flatulence has passed (no pun intended).
Shortly after I posted about this problem, my computer up and died. Crash commandeered Kidzilla's birthay gift (new computer and hard disc), and built a new system for me. We owe Kidzilla a new computer. I have only Internet Explorer so far, so if anyone needs to contact me, please do it through my address. I'll get caught up when I have Agent again. Let's hope that Rita won't be the enormous disaster that Katrina was. But I'm not holding my breath. :-( Carol |

Did you have milk with those Cheerios? Perhaps you've developed a lactose intolerance? It isn't unheard of to develop one later in life. My mother developed it after her hysterectomy. I'm not sure yet, but I did run an informal experiment last night. I ate some of Crash's Fruit Loops, and didn't have a problem. So I don't think it's the milk. I've gotta read the list of ingredients on the Cheerios and see what's what. I eat oatmeal all the time, so it's gotta be something besides the oats. > > At this very moment, I am dying.
