The no email address thing is a very good idea. Even back in the
mid-90's when I started realy using Usent, my old email addy ended up
on a bunch of spammer CD's, obviously, and even way back then I was
forced to change my ID and email. These days, it would be absolute
murder to make that mistake. I set up an email account for my
daughter as one of our DSL sub-accounts. She never used it, but when
I went back a few weeks later to see if I still remembered the
password, it was FULL of obscene spam. The acct had never been used,
not even once. I wrote a nasty email to the provider accusing them of
selling off their own accounts, but all I got back was a form letter
wanting me to rate their customer service. The provider was SBC,
BTW.

Protecting your email address is an issue, I understand. I use "q" on
usenet. WHY do you have to change a usenet nick when folks can follow
from the old to the new, especially by making an announcement?

Very impractical, imho,

If you were really a jerk and wanted to hide, you wouldn't ever tell
anyone about it. For me, personally, it was sort of a mental break
between old habits and new ones. I know it sounds ridiculous, but
that's the way it was. I made no attempt to hide the fact that I was
changing posting names and, in fact, the names are quite similar.
Also, sometimes people just get tired of the name they originally
chose, and decide to change it. I don't use my real name or email
addy because the internet is a dangerous place to hang out, sometimes.
I admire the people who DO use their real info because I think it
shows a sort of courage. Maybe it's really denial about how dangerous
it can be, but nonetheless, that's what they choose to do. I'm not
some kind of dangerous criminal who needs to maintain anonymity to
avoid going to jail or whatever - I just choose to not be all that
open about who I am and where I live, because I have kids who my duty
is to protect. If I become (once again) an absolute asshole, then
people will killfile or shut me out and I would suffer by that. This
is an open discussion group of really wonderful people - each one has
their own life and picadillos and I think most people take that into
account/ It's a microcosm of the real world and we're all just people
with normal lives and problems and to tell you the truth, THIS group
of people is the best damn bunch of good folks I've ever encountered
on the internet. So God bless 'em all.

Some of us have a decent spamblocking ISP to hide behind too.

The ISP probably didn't do anything and the email address was probably
easy for a bot to figure out. Don't forget that spammers figure out
email addresses the same way telemarketing figures out telephone
numbers. It ain't brain surgery and there are a lot of duds - but
there are enough live ones to make it all worthwhile. So, if you want
to foil spammers, it's best to combine random letters and numbers as
your real email address.... and above all, don't publish it.

Okay, I remember and (you're right) I like the new you better.
You've morphed into a VERY nice person, Gator. Given your medical
history, I'd say the old you was in a lot of pain (which makes people
cranky) and on pain killing meds (which made you not care what you
said or who you said it to). Thanks for solving the mystery!

SBC... Not surprised.

After one of the last "worm" messes where everyone was getting literally
_thousands_ of e-mail messages clogging up the server, Century installed
some decent spam filters.

I still get SOME spam, but about 1/10th of what I used to get. I used to
check the server "gray mail" to make sure that I was not losing
anything, but it seems to be working well. I don't even bother anymore.

Cheers!

There were other issues with other lists. ;-)

Like I said, it's complicated...

"Katra" has a long and colorful history.
It took me awhile to get used to the "dynamics" of usenet so I was a bit
of a jackass for awhile. I've been using that ID for about 7 years.

I will not be changing my e-mail address, nor my ebay user ID. There is
no need for that.

Just the Usenet ID and on Austin.forsale, I'll still use the "Katra" id
as needed complete with sig as that has my real (coded) e-mail address
for direct contact.

If anyone else needs my (real) e-mail addy, just ask...

Cheers!

Honestly, Andy I don't really know WHY I did it except that it felt
good at the time. I could just as easily have changed nicks and wrote
like a different person if I was trying to hide or if I was so ashamed
of my conduct that I needed a new identity. But I didn't do that, and
I won't do that. If I screw up, I'll admit it publically (like I have
so far) and just move on. If it's such incredibly bad behavior that I
feel the need to hide, I just wouldn't post here any longer. It's not
like the universe requires me to post in RFC - it's a hobby, not a
lifestyle <G>.

I find that interesting, and it's probably just a matter of ignorance
on my part, but most of the stuff I've seen or read about the low-carb
thing is so full of bacon fat, butter and the like that it seemed like
a scam to me. It's sort of like, well, yeah, you'll lose weight if ya
cut down on the carbs but you're gonna die of a heart attack with all
that grisly fat you're eating. I'm on a diet for health reasons and
so far it loks like the South Beach diet is the closest thing I've
found to coincide with what the doc told me to do. Quite common sense
and very simple. I'm supposed to limit protein intake to the rough
equivalent of a piece of meat oor fish the size of a deck of cards,
but my intake of vegetables and starches (mainly whole grain, breads,
pasta, whatever) is unlimited in theory, but not in reality - you can
gain a ton of pounds if you get carried away! Low-salt, low fat and
you'd think that would be a downer, but it's not at all. As long as I
follow the diet, I can occasionally splurge and eat a piece of pizza
or a fast-food sandwich or whatever. It only happens once or twice a
month, but it's a real treat as opposed to a lifestyle, which is what
it used to be. Anyway, you've found something that works for you, and
more power to ya!

See, those are the myths.
If you actually read the material, you will find it's not true.
The best book I can recommend is "Atkins for Life".

South Beach is Low carb. ;-)

The secret is, fresh meats, fresh veggies and a limited amount of
_healthy_ fats.

f'rinstance, just finished lunch and it was a grilled sliced chicken
breast with some sliced roma tomato, dressed with a basil dressing that
I just made. Fresh basil, bragg's liquid aminos, lemon juice, lime juice
and a little olive and grapeseed oils and just a smidgin of salt free
lemon pepper, all blended together in the blender. The overall flavor
was of the fresh basil.

My primary diet is steamed veggies and grilled meats, some fats from
dairy, olive and grapeseed oils, as well as some fattier fish like
catfish and salmon. I don't worry about fat, but I don't eat a lot of it
either. I don't much care for it.

Bacon is eaten in VERY small quantities, usually with beans but I did
have a BLT yesterday on a whole wheat pita pocket, but I'd not had one
for many months as bread is a "treat".

I mainly avoid bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, and pretty much any other
grains and starchy foods. Veggies are mostly leafy greens and squashes.
I eat the occasional corn on the cob as a treat.

50 lbs. gone is a good start, but I still have 70 lbs. to go! I also hit
the gym 4 days per week. 30 mintues on the life cycle (currently at
level 7 manual) and 45 minutes to 1 hour of weight lifting.

My last lipid readings were triglycerides: 83, HDL 58, Cholesterol 217
which is still a bit too high, but I take Vanachol for that and it's
helping. It's one of the safer pharmeceuticals. My Doctor knows I won't
take statins. ;-)

Cheers!

With all the incredible volume of blood work I've had done over the
las couple of years (they usually take at least 9 or 10 vials worth) I
have never had a cholestoral (sp?) check. Might be a good thing to
know, and probably the test is not all that expensive. You know, I
love eggs, but I save my egg ration for a week or two and have one
good first-class omlet. I almost never use butter or fake butter.
I'm on really low salt. But I might be amazed if I actually saw the
true cloresterol numbers. It's another one of those "silent killers"
that you really should be aware of.

Too true! DH eats what he wants when he wants including fried foods and
lots of red meat. I watch my food intake like a hawk avoiding fried
foods, breading - I hate breading on any food anyways -, sugar, salt and
lean heavily on fruits and veggies. I've done this forever because I
come from a family plagued with diabetes and am terrified of getting it
too. Guess who has high cloresterol? Me! Must be genetic I knew I
should have chosen my parents more wisely!

Shaun aRe - BTW - some (3/4oz) of my greenery is ready, harvested, and cured
now! Lets just say this is the finest flavoured we've ever experienced, with
aromas and flavours of fresh grapefruit zest and lavender, and the effect of
consumption does NOTHING to belie the huge amounts of rather obsessive
(LOL!) loving care and attention given to its development. Should be a
bloody good xmas, heheheh...

Now I'm curious. What greenery? Is it easy to grow? I like the sounds
of the flavours. Do share please?

Indeed! looks like all but the chocolate habaneros may have to be harvested
at this unripe stage (some of the choc habs have turned colour now and are
starting to live up to their name, YAY!). Luckily most of these still have
good flavour while green, so not a total disaster!
