Default Microwave cabinet & stove

The microwave is never used except for heating left-overs, and heating milk
or butter; that's about it! What a waste of space. When we bought the house
there was a built-in cabinet for the already-there microwave to sit in, I
cannot think for the life of me what I'd do with that particular space if I
didn't have the microwave in it, tho. I see no reason to wreck a perfectly
good cabinet - but usable for what else?

This is my first try using tinypic. I hope it works.

Included in the picture also is the stove I want to replace possibly using a
telescope downdraft.

Thanks for looking and any commenting.

One approach is to get more use out of the microwave. It is usable for a lot
more! You can get truly excellent results with risotto, fish, polenta, stews
and other moist dishes. Maybe this is a good motivation to experiment!

Lovely cabinets Dee! We don't use a microwave much either. You could
maybe add a shelf stained to the same colour as your cabinets then use
it as a display for cookbooks and maybe a basket or two.

Could you put a toaster oven or toaster in there? Perhaps another electric
appliance that you have that would get more use if out and ready to use all
the time?

I don't think a day passes I don't use my microwave for something,
mostly reheating, but reheating small quantities in their storage
container sure beats messing up a pot on the stove... and how else can
one reheat a half cup of coffee, or even a few ounces of plain water
for a recipe. I also freeze a lot of my veggies, besides those I buy
frozen, the microwave is the only way I cook frozen veggies. I also
find the microwave invaluable for last minute defrosting, great for
melting cheese on toast too... and I don't always want that lonely
slice of LO pizza ice cold from the fridge. Maybe you need to make a
concerted effort to use your microwave more... at least you're not one
of those addle brained stups who's ascared of microwaves.

I don't do grilled cheese the usual way anymore... too much fat from
frying in butter and the inside face of the bread is raw... plus I have
a pan to clean. Instead I make plain toast in my bread toaster, then
top each with a slice of cheese and pop em in the nuker for a half
minute... voila... open faced grilled cheeze without all the fuss or
calories, perfect! Seeded rye toast spread with a bit of mustard and
topped with ham then swiss is a favorite, 'specially with a pickle and
a beer.

Don't think I'd get rid of that microwave oven so quick I were you...
and like you said, you don't have a use for that space.

Ouch, we have one of those here in the MN house. I keep banging my head
trying to work around it---ours sits a bit farther from a wall and near a
corner (I was not part of planning this kitchen). It's a relic from the
time when kitchen designers (at that time, aka people who didn't use
kitchens whatsoever) just knew we all would quit using those time-consuming
stoves and turn to prepared foods and the microwave. Well, we fooled them,
didn't we?!

Dee Dee,

Was that photo taken before you moved in? I'm wondering...where's your
*stuff*? If your counters are normally that bare, then you probably
don't have much that you need to put in that cabinet!

But I'm hurtin' for space,...I could put so much in there...Cookbooks
would fill it up. Or, two matching big rectangular baskets (tall ones)
filled with smallish odds and ends that don't fit well anywhere else
(for me, that could be pot lids, table linens, the kids lunchboxes and
water bottles, utensils that we don't use often and clutter the utensil
drawer). I am also short on pantry space, so could fill a couple of big
baskets with pantry staples or those bulky items that don't fit
anywhere...bread, big bags of chips or pretzels.

I could put my pitchers and teapots there, ...I don't think the
coffeemaker would fit, but the crockpot probably would (no room for
these in the kitchen, they live in the basement). If nothing else, I
might splurge on a big beautiul piece of that Polish pottery and display
it with a few photos. Or I'd put my cannisters there.

If you took it down, would it leave a strange-looking gap? Because you
could always hang it elsewhere in the house (or basement or garage).

Good luck, Dee! I hope to have extra cabinet space some day. :-)

I use my microwave about once every two days. Unfortunately, the magnetron
in mine just died, and it's cost-prohibitive to repair, so I've got to buy a
new one. Anybody got a recommendation for a microhood unit?

That's a good idea, a toaster oven. But, actually my toaster oven is
setting underneath the microwave on the counter, as the space underneath is
pretty unusable for preparation. I do like the toaster oven to be away from
wooden structures due to possible fires, and sitting there, I can pull it
out a bit from the wall.
Thanks, Debbie.

I believe that is true that the person who planned 'my' kitchen wasn't into
cooking at all. I noted a pretty bare cupboard when we took a look-see.
I think the Jenn-air stove was part of the package for those who didn't cook
a lot. But I'll try to change that Jenn-air come next spring into something
I like a little more. It's had it life used up by me.
Thanks,
Dee Dee

I took the 'stuff' off the counter, otherwise you couldn't see the
cupboards/cabinets for it.

I hope you're tall. I can hardly reach inside mine, and you can see that it
isn't too high. Peter said that there were plenty of good recipes to make
in the microwave, but PETER! I can't even get my elbows up to it to stir.

1. learn more uses for the mw. It really is a useful tool for other than
simple reheating

2. add another shelf so it can be used for storage for fancy dishes or
glassware

3. add partitions for wine bottles. While not the best place to store
wine, it will look nice.

Chris, I got thru with my simple dinner early (mashed potatoes, fried onions
and sausages, cannellini beans, fresh spinach & bought german whole-grain
bread) before the movie, so I thought I'd send you a picture of my kitchen
and my stuff, to show you that all is an illusion.

http://www.tinypic.com/e0r3mv - yep, here's my 'stuff'

and there's two rooms downstairs full of 'my stuff" on shelves.

I agree with Peter. The microwave ain't just for leftovers :-) The
Barbara Kafka book _Microwave Gourmet_ is quite good. I got my copy
2nd hand at a yard sale, it looked brand spanking new. It doesn't
now, I've used it quite a bit. I love the risotto recipe, and also
use the lemon curd recipe every Christmas. My grandmother adores
lemon curd.

I also make my cream pie fillings in the microwave. They turn just as well
or better, and no chance of scorching the bottom.

Those two things look pretty good. I've never made lemon curd. And risotto
always necessitates more stirring than I'm willing to do, so I'll give it a
try. I'm always afraid I'll get burned lifting the dishes down- to- counter
even tho I have the proper gloves.
Thanks, Tammy. I'll look for this book today. Mammo day today in D.C. -
