Make some hot cocoa and cool it down. 1/2 C sugar 1/4 C cocoa 1/3 C hot water 4 C milk Mix everything except milk. Bring to a boil, then simmer a minute or two, whisking. Stir in milk, heat back up but don't boil. -- Reg email: RegForte (at) (that free MS email service) (dot) com |

Now add just a couple drops of milk and stir till it forms a paste. Slowly stir in the rest of the milk. |

Fox's U-Bet or even Hershey's, whished rapidly into cold milk makes a pretty acceptable drink. -- Wayne in Phoenix If there's a nit to pick, some nitwit will pick it. |

This may not really help you, but... we recently switched from using cocoa to 99% using unsweetened chocolate in making our 'chocolate sodas'. We dissolve a one ounce block of chocolate [we're using Scharffenberger] in about a cup of water by heating. You would of course use milk. For us the one ounce block is enough for a quart of 'soda'. Yes, there are a few flecks of solid chocolate in the final drink, but we think that that just makes it even more interesting. We cool the melted chocolate-liquid mix under cold running water, which takes just a few minutes. --thelma : -sw |

When I used to make it this way, I also added some vanilla extract.

Just mix together approximately one part cocoa powder with three parts sugar and three parts water and a dash of salt. Bring it to a boil and boil it for a minute, then add a bit of vanilla extract. > Is there an easy way to make it from just cocoa and sugar? Mix the cocoa powder and sugar together and then add a little bit of milk to make a paste and gradually add more milk. |

I solve my grandkids' cravings by blending Hershey's syrup into cold milk. Dora |

I have never seen or heard of chocolate milk made any other way than with milk and chocolate syrup. Has that gone out of fashion? |

>cocoa
>doesn't dissolve in cold liquids Two options, at least: (1) stir a large amount of cocoa into a small amount of milk (i.e., as with cornstarch and to make gravy) until you have a thick paste. Then add the rest of the milk. or (2) use a blender. Neil |

Far as I can tell, someone wrote:

Chocolate milk, like 100,000 other recipes, was made at home from ingredients before someone put it in a container and sold it as a convenience food product. He loves chocolate milk; my stepmother has to buy Hershey's syrup at Costco to keep him in supply... :-) -- J.J. in WA (Change COLD to HOT for e-mail) ~ mom, vid gamer, novice cook ~ ...fish heads, fish heads, eat them up, yum! |

Stir constantly.. the cocoa needs to cook a bit to lose "raw" flavor. Sort of the same concept in cooking roux (flour and fat used to thicken sauces/soups) |
