Harry & David - great products, but a very disappointing experience
I've made several purchases from H&D - expensive, but excellent quality and
service - I was very disappointed that these guys, especially with what they get for their products, still needed to sell my name and address to everyone from cancer charities, wine-by-mail catalogs, you name it - and even though I've opted out on their web site, cancelled my account, and made several phone calls to them politely asking that the stop selling my name, it still continues - my business must not have been worth much to them. |

Harry & David - great products, but a very disappointing experience
The cancer charity used a numeric designator (included in the address on
their solicitaton) to track where they got the name and address - I called them, they kindly did some digging, and they told me it was H&D. The wine-by-mail people told me that they either got my name from someone I bought cheese from, or H&D - I've never bought cheese besides at a grocery store, so it had to be H&D. BTW, after repeated requests to cease and desist, I still get catalogs from them - the next one will get mailed back attached to a large box of rocks. Think they'll get the message? Why don't you file a complaint with the FTC? I'm sure they'd love to take a shot at a high visibility net retailer. I assume you opted out at the time you placed your order or created your account. I don't know what the rule is if you opt out at a later date, like after you start getting the mailers from the other vendors. |

Might have been them but she doesn't know for sure... this often happens when an oder is placed on line and you forget to un-check that little box that grants permission to add your name to receive other offers, and often that box appears more than once during the check out process, so you need to keep an eye out for it on each page... once you set this feature in motion it's nearly impossible to stop, because the mail order company rep you speak to by phone has no way to access that information, because as soon as you click to complete your order your name and mailing address is instantly batch emailed to a zillion other mail order companys. And it matters not they don't have your correct name, obviously all they need is your correct mailing address, and obviously if you're receiveing the catalogs they do. And btw, this can also occur because most of the major carriers (other than the USPS) also harvest addies to sell to marketing companys, and often they're not actually sold directly, it's a reciprical accomodation for using that particular carrier, of course at discount. Anyway, I think Harry & David suck (probably both figuratively and literally). I can buy just as good produce (if not better) at the local market at about 1/10 the price... I often receive their products as gifts. My dentist sends all his customers a box of their pears every Christmas, those pears are very ordinary, not even ripe, they're hard as rocks, gotta let em ripen same as any others... and I kinda feel uncomfortable eating pears what cost $36/doz + shipping. I make a lot of mail order purchases. I know they pass my name to other mail order companys, even though they claim they don't. But I really don't give a rat's B-hind. Some of the catalogs I'd otherwise not receive I find interesting. What I do to stop those catalogs I don't want from continuing is to wait until a few weeks past Christmas and then call the individual catalog companys and ask that they remove my name, they always do. I don't try to figure out who set the ball in motion, they can't do anything anyway... gotta call the company direct whose catalog you need to stop. In fact when I moved I needed to do the same thing in reverse, I made up a list of all catalogs I wanted and then called them all to give them my new address... actually I simply created a file to place the center insert with all the contact info from each catalog. Btw, whenever you discard a catalog make sure to shred the portion with your name and address, including that center insert... today's catalogs often contain a customer number too... a word to the wise. I had the identical experience, I really liked their stuff blah blah blah, but they filled my mailbox with 8 gazillion other food catalogs and that made me a little ****ed off. Hey, I know it goes on, they sell your address, but come on!! I knew it was them because they misspelled my name and so did all the mail that followed. I stopped doing business with them. nancy |

My order was placed via phone, so there wasn't any opt out capability.
