I am only doing this because I promised, and the kind folks here on RCM
deserve to know.

I will be going under the knife on Tuesday.
The situation is a lot more serious than I had hoped it to be.
Not to go into too many details; Apparantly one *can* *survive* after having
one's entire stomach removed.
On topic - Wonder what kind of food will be appropriate.
Damned if I know hot that works but I have to believe my surgeon (who -
BTW - is advertised to me as the best qualified in this procedure in
Canada).
That is (almost) the worst case scenario G).
Chances of my outliving the actual operation are very good. After..........?
If you look at my sig line at the bottom of this post you will see something
that has been there for years - long before I ever imagined how personal it
would become.
Please check it out!
Now it *is* personal!

Sigh; Maiiling address for those who asked.
PO Box 872.
Prince Rupert
BC
Canada.
V8J 3Y1

No need to wish me luck - I know those thoughts are there.
And, Sheldumb, go ahead and accuse me of hoaxing the group; I know how much
you enjoy dumping on the helpless.

Keep up the good work gang.

Regards.
Ken.

Thanks Wayne - but - And *please* everyone. do not let this morph into a
religious argument - I do not believe in a God. Certainly not one that
actually cares about something as insignificant as my miserable (poetic
licence here) existence.
Looking mortality in the face has not changed that view.

Do something concrete.
Go to the site in my sig line and sign up!

Do that for me (or for your God) - whatever.

Love.

That's okay. Then I wish your surgeon great success and you a fast and
full recovery.

I will definitely do that, Ken.

As soon as you're able, do please let us know how you are coming along.

That's a given Wayne.
If I am unable to I will designate a local friend to do it.
I do have lots of support here.
Folks I have known for years and those I have helped in various ways with no
thought of compensation are now 'circling the wagons' on my behalf.
It is a good feeling!
Tearing up now.

Ken, Hang in there. March 29, 2000 I was diagnosed with advanced ,
very aggressive prostate cancer and the Doctors gave me "probably
about five years" I have been through a lot of treatments, but feel
really good and Sept 7 of this year the same Doctor said "You're going
to be around for a lot of years." Next my wife of fifty years and I
are going to Alaska for a tour.
A few months after my diagnosis, my older brother was diagnosed with
stomach cancer. He had a serious operation and most of his stomach
had to be removed. Last month the doctors pronounced him cured, since
it was about five years after his operation. Be opimistic, enjoy
every day and get well

I do wish you the best of luck... :-(
There will be a lot of special considerations for diet,
your doctor and a good nutritionist can advise you.

Vitamin supplementation will become imperitive I understand.

Be well and take care!

Best of luck Ken. One of the sayings our gastric bypass group likes is "rejoice
in your limitations." Course we were *trying* to lose weight. If you can't eat
your favorite noodle dish, rejoice that you can eat cream of mushroom soup. Or
whatever. Rejoice that you can see, walk, hear, play bagpipes, etc. Our group is
very diverse in what we can or want to eat, but we all agree we liked cold stuff
better, especially the first year. We also found out that group meetings and
sharings helped a lot too. Find a group with your particular disease and go. May
the force be with you.

It's good to know that you have a lot of good support. That's probably one
of the most important factors in recovery. We'll look to having you back!

Hey, blaming others just tells me you have no inner strength (that's
unfortunate), so if dumping your anger on me somehow helps you get
through then go for it... but I rather suggest you get a sense of
humor, STAT... you'll need it, laughter is truly the best medicine.
And if you're wondering what kind of food is appropriate, breast milk
on tap.

Ken, you're gonna wake up. Recovery won't be fun, but I send lots of laughs
(or maybe that's not a good idea?) your way. Post surgery, as soon as
you're able, send us the foods you're allowed to consume and we can all help
put together a menu for you. That *will* be fun!

I am not a believer in happy thoughts curing disease, and the stress
you are under right now must be enormous, but try to stay as calm as
possible. Ask your doc for something like Xanax...call the service
over the weekend and get a prescription.

Even though the reality of the situation will create anxiety, there is
no reason why you should feel so very uneasy with it. You will have a
long recovery period after the surgery, which may be only one of the
treatments necessary to cure you. You need a clear head to make
important decisions and stress can hinder it.

Do you have a close friend or family member who can be advocate for
you right now? Hopefully you have. If so, allow this person to take on
all the burdens except the unavoidable physical ones. Try to focus on
the most important task at hand - getting you through this, one day at
a time. If you cannot handle it on a day-to-day basis, by golly, then
concern yourself with getting though it all an hour at a time.

Think of the "best of you," the wonderful things you have
accomplished, seen, and shared and concentrate on the joys and
pleasures as much as you can. You can cry until you can't catch your
breath, that will happen and is nothing to be ashamed of, but if you
are so uncomfortable that you cannot relax or sleep, please call your
doctor and get something. S/he will understand and get you through the
next days.

All the best,

Boron

I did some visualization when I was recovering -- funny what the mind comes
up with. My everyday visualization when I was up and looking out the window
was seeing a lot of Indians (4-10 of them dressed in Indian attire)
wandering around in my yard keeping 'whatever' away. I "felt" that they
protected me.
I tried to do a lot of visualization techniques using the books' ideas, but
I could never get them going in my head. I think you have to come up with
your own.
