Wayne I just read your report on the slurry pie crust. Thanks for
doing the testing for us,. Making two different kinds of pie crust in one day is really more than anyone can be expected to do! Christine, I followed the thread when you were searching for the recipe, but missed whether the one at Recipe Link was the one you were looking for. I'd like to try this crust, but want to be sure I'm doing the one you were looking for. Thanksgiving is getting close and it seems a perfect time to try a new crust recipe. Thanks to you both, jillie Roseville, CA |

Well, thanks, Jillie. I'm not bragging, but there was a time not so many years ago when I would bake as many as 8-10 pies in one day to have for the holiday and for friends who couldn't bake. > Christine, I followed the thread when you were searching for the > recipe, but missed whether the one at Recipe Link was the one you were > looking for. This is the recipe that was posted by Karen for Christine... Pastry Made with Hydrogenated Shortening - Two-Crust Pie Pastry made be made with shortening of this kind in exactly the same way as when using lard. However, the following recipe is almost foolproof, and the pastry is flaky and tender: 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted before measuring 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup water 3/4 cup shortening Sift flour and salt into a bowl. Take out 1/3 cup of this flour and mix with the 1/4 cup water to form a paste. Cut shortening into remaining flour until the pieces are the size of small peas. Add flour paste to blended shortening and flour mixture. Mix with a fork until the dough comes together and can be shaped into a ball. Divide in half, roll out both crusts about 1/8 inch thick. If you are making a one crust pie by this method, use 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted before measuring, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup shortening. Take out 1/4 cup flour and blend with 3 tablespoons water. Proceed as above. Then I went home and made meatballs for tonight. Spaghetti and meatballs, except I have left over mashed potatoes and will serve that instead of the pasta. I cannot waste them and mashed potatoes do not freeze. Marcel will have to be talked into believing that the spaghetti got mushy. ![]() I must have had three dozen recorded telephone calls in the last three days. What a waste of money this is. Also, what right do the ones who make a live call have to ask for whom I intend to vote? Aren't we assured and entitled of a secret vote? |

I know the Eyetalians call it 'gravy' but it's really not the same thing. Put the damn bottle of Scotch down!! It's affecting your judgment. You are the height of politeness. Of course we're entitled to a secret vote. When they ask me, I tell them I'm voting for "the candidate of my choice" (click). Cinchy. Or I don't answer the phone if I don't recognize the caller ID number. -- http://www.jamlady.eboard.com, updated 11-7-05 with the first story about our trip to San Francisco for Nephew Pat's wedding last weekend. |

Next came the mashed potatoes with meatballs and peas covering them. Marcel ate everything and never noticed that it was almost impossible to twirl the "Spaghetti" strands around the fork. ![]() I am far from polite when I receive those calls. I have even told some of those callers, that it is unlawful to make these calls. I have no idea whether it is or not, but I sure enjoy threatening to report them. |

It certainly isn't mandatory to serve meatballs with spaghetti, and I'm sure it was very tasty. We had chicken a la king over boiled rice with succotash on the side. Homey and tasty. > I am far from polite when I receive those calls. I have even told > some of those callers, that it is unlawful to make these calls. Our house phone line is answered by our fax machine on the first ring. It's not that we receive many faxes. It's because I don't want to talk to mass marketers, surveyors, politicians, and wrong numbers. We never get those on the cell phones. -- Wayne Boatwright *¿* _____________________________________________ A chicken in every pot is a *LOT* of chicken! |

But chili sauce on mashed potatoes is devine - one of our winter comfort foods - smashed potatoes topped with homemade chili sauce! Yummy! Meatballs would go well as a side to potatoes served this way. > > >>many faxes. It's because I don't want to talk to mass marketers, >>surveyors, politicians, and wrong numbers. I guess he didn't want to make a fuss, or, perhaps he didn't care one way or another. I am certain that he knows the difference. ![]() As for those crank calls, I am registered not to receive telemarketing calls and do not receive any, yet during the pre voting season I get all these calls, asking me to vote for this or that candidate or answer a bunch of questions for a poll. I wish I could register somewhere, in order to have those people not call. Tonight for dinner, Stuffed Cabbage (bought ready made) for Marcel and a piece of roasted chicken for me. |

We were also receiving an inordinate number of "wrong number" calls, and calls for the person who had the number before we did. The fax idea was a good solution for us. > Tonight for dinner, Stuffed Cabbage (bought ready made) for Marcel and > a piece of roasted chicken for me. I'm very fond of stuffed cabbage, but have not had it for quite a while. I must remember to make some. Roast chicken is always good!
