Default Food-TV kitchens. Dammit.

I've watched a lot of food-tv cooking shows. Most of them (not all) use
island cooktop stoves combined with food prep areas.

What I like about that design is that people can work at the island from
all sides and not crowd each other. but it dawned on me (v-8 headslap)
that you'd need one hellova huge kitchen space to have that. More
specifically a more "square-ish" space so people traffic around the
island isn't "single-file".

Food-TV-Reality sucks, sometimes!

Who'd be a much better cook in a food-tv kitchen.

"Food-TV-Reality" dictates that the audience be able to see the host.

True, but "scram" the audience and you'd still need a large space in the
home.

It's more to do with being able to see the cook and what he or she is
doing than convience. DD has a kitchen with a large island with plenty
of space around it. I like it but could never have one in our kitchen
without adding onto the house. My kitchen is kitchen only, not an
eat-in kitchen.

You mean like this?

http://community.webshots.com/photo/...81807478lEPQBN

The fridge, dishwasher and sink are on the left side (out of the shot). The
prep-island in the middle has drawers and cabinets for storing cookware.
(Personally, I'd hang a rack for some pots over the prep island, but it's
okay the way it is.) The stove, oven and microwave are on the right. You
can walk around all day and not bump into someone who is working.

This is the kitchen in my parents' home.

My kitchen is pretty big, but the island is made from a standard
cupboard/countertop thing. It's about 36" long. Just countertop, no
grill, sink, or anything else, though there is an outlet on the side.
It came with the house.

There is room for a larger island, but you'd have to remove some of
the perimiter cupboards in order to have room to walk around it, open
the fridge, etc.

This is the first time in 35 years that I've had an island, and I
would never ever live without one again. Why, you ask? Because I can
watch TV and interact with people in the family room while I'm
cooking! This takes cooking to a whole new level for me, and I spend a
lot more time doing it. I only wish I could have a cooktop and small
sink in there as well. I seriously wouldn't need any other
counterspace.
