Default Breakfast

While doing my grocery shopping today I splurged on a 28 ounce can of
John Mc.Cann's Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal... haven't had this in years.
Tomorrow's breakfast will be yummy and healthful. Isn't there some
Irish law that says when one has Mc.Cann's for brecky one must imbibe a
minimum of six pints that day?

I like the link, in the recipe section, the oatmeal rissotto looks
interesting enough to try!
Always wondered about savoury oat recipes, I only ever do porridge, parkin
or cookies.
Thanks

Out of curiosity, is there any appreciable difference between
purchasing this name brand product and purhasing steel cut oats in
bulk at the natural food store? Not being a smartass, just curious.

My breakfast this a.m. was freshly made bread schmeared with apple
pumpkin butter and a "Tammacino" which is my pseudo-cappucino made
with extra strong cawfee, a dollop of sf chocolate DaVinci syrup,
frothed milk, and a sprinkling of cocoa on top. Yum.

TammyM, loves steel cut oats

Tammy, a nutritionist Mary Enig, says to soak the steel cut oats overnight
using in a little vinegar - DH just pours a teaspoon or less in -- He
drains the water off in the morning. I don't know if this makes them
better, or it is something nutritionally. We have bought steel-cut oats in
50# buckets, in small amounts from Trader Joes in a package, in bulk at
Whole Foods, etc. and in the green/gold/white tins. I can't say any are
better quality than the other.

If you are a real connoisseur of steel cut oats you may be able to
tell the difference. I doubt that I could if you put two bowls side
by side. Besides, I only pay $.59/lb for the bulk and they taste just
fine to me.

They all seem to be about the same except for McCann's, which IMHO has a
much better texture.

Interesting, Wayne, I think DH just bought some at Wegman's this last trip;
when I do a taste comparison, I'll let you know my taste test.

Look for a difference in the size of the cut grain, as McCann's seems to be
a bit larger. Consequently, the grains remain a bit more obvious when
cooked, which is my preference.

I do an oat-nut burger by mixing (sorry, no quantities, I do it by feel,
but next time I do it, I'll post amounts) oats, chopped walnuts, diced
onion and celery, milk and egg, salt and pepper together until it's a
thick batter. Let it sit ten minutes or so, then make patties out of it
and fry them in oil. When they're done, they're good as they are, or
sometimes I lay them in a baking dish and cover them with mushroom
gravy, then bake them for 20-30 minutes. My idea of heaven.

Maybe I'll make those this week. It's been too long.

Thanks for the idea, they sound delicious, and a quick put together.(Easy
ingredients to find in the store cupboard and fridge!)
