This is the second time in the last few months this has happened. I picked
up a couple of pork shoulder roasts to smoke for pulled pork. The use by date on them says November 18th. Today is the 15th....so why does it smell so bad? It looks normal, not brown or gray or anything. I opened the package and the smell about gagged me. Has anyone else had this experience? I assume it's bad...at least, I won't eat it. I'll be returning it. Ugh. kimberly...trying to think of something else to have for dinner. |

Or packaged? Does it still smell after it's been rinsed off? Sometimes the bloody liquid in the package starts to go, but it doesn't necessarily mean the meat is bad... yet. Chicken is the worst offender around here, those packs of cut-up pieces. If it's happening repeatedly, find another butcher. Dawn |

My frige is a monitored 38 to 40 degrees. If I buy pork anymore, I freeze it right away if I'm not going to use it the same day. Does not seem to matter where I buy it. It rots quickly. :-( And yes, I have also returned it when it did that. -- Om. "My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch." -Jack Nicholson |

Once the packaging has been open for 5 to 15 minutes, the smell dissapates. A quick rinse of the meat in cold water will also dissipate the smell The meat is just fine. I unwrap 200 or so pounds of pork shoulder every day, and every single time I'll get that smell. That same smell would indicate a problem with beef or poultry. -- Dave www.davebbq.com |

(It will probably dissipate just from exposure to air.) If the meat is *really* starting to spoil, the smell will get worse when you start cooking it. Best regards, Bob |

I've sometimes had those cryopac ones smell funky at first, but then after rinsing the meat is actually ok. I took the entire piece of meat back, but they didn't care.... I only needed to bring in the wrapper with the price sticker on it and they returned my money with no problem at all. -- Practice safe eating. Always use condiments. |

The first few times, I chucked it into the trash immediately. Last time, I let the smell dissapate (it went away completely in a few minutes), rinsed the meat, cooked it, and we ate it. It was fine. I have a really sensitive nose and can often smell things that nobody else can smell, so I just figured it was me. Chris |

I meant that it was difficult to compare it to anything else. Mustiness from wild boar is not going to smell the same as outright spoilage. IMHO anyway. -- Om. a lot of the pork is pumped full of junk and that makes it smell bad.
