I have a recipe for mint chocolate chip ice cream that calls for
peppermint oil. Since I hadn't been able to find it, I substituted McCormick peppermint extract (doubling the quantity used, as per some substitution guides I came across). I found that the extract had a harshness to it--I don't know if it was the brand, or in using an extract (dissolved in alcohol) rather than the oil. I'd like to find a good food-quality peppermint oil (as opposed to aromatherapy oil, which I have found). Any recommendations for brands, or places to look (NY metro area)? I need it by about mid-week, so mail order is probably out (I don't know that I want to overnight it). -- to respond (OT only), change "spamless.invalid" to "optonline.net" <http://www.thecoffeefaq.com/> |

LorAnn (sp?)
Cake decorating/candy making supply place. Try King Arthur Flour. Sweet Celebrations/Maid of Scandinavia. What's your drop-dead date for having it? -B In article >, Scott > wrote: > I have a recipe for mint chocolate chip ice cream that calls for > peppermint oil. I don't know about today's mega-chains, but as kids we'd go down to the Rexall and buy cinnamon oil to make cinnamon toothpicks. They usually had half a dozen flavor oils including a couple mints. We have nothing like the old Rexall here anymore, WallyWorld having killed 'em all off, but I bet NY has some old holdouts somewhere. nb |

I miss family-owned hardware stores, too, which have mostly been driven to extinction by Home Depot and Lowe's. Scott, try to find a place that sells cake & candy supplies as Melba's Jammin' suggested. I am certain it was the alcohol content in the extract that caused the "harshness" you described. Jill |

The place had wooden floors and crotchety 60+ yr old clerks wearing bow-ties and garters. Whatta hoot! I, for one, miss it. The classic Victorian building, which for the last 15 yrs hosted a more modern Ace Hardware business, is now vacant and will probably become the next trendy restaurant along one of those boringly unoriginal CA renovated promenade-style mainstreets. Try any natural foods store, or perhaps a baking store. Whenever I make something with cocoa powder, I usually add a few drops of peppermint oil -- not enough that you can taste it, but enough to improve the flavor in a subtle way. -A |

Thursday, and that's pushing it. It's to make mint chocolate chip ice cream for my niece, who's visiting from Pennsylvania on Friday. She's going back on Saturday. Should have added a biggie: she has celiac disease, so it has to be gluten-free. *Shouldn't* be a problem with an oil, but I'd have to call the manufacturer first, or otherwise check it out. Thanks for the mention of Lorann; they have a retailer-locator on their web site, and I may have found a location not too far away. And it seems that their flavors are gluten-free. -- to respond (OT only), change "spamless.invalid" to "optonline.net" <http://www.thecoffeefaq.com/> |

Oddly enough, some CVS drugstores seem to it also carry Lorann oils, though the LorAnn website doesn't happen to list one near me. I don't know if that means that the local ones don't carry it, or that the listings are incomplete. -- to respond (OT only), change "spamless.invalid" to "optonline.net" <http://www.thecoffeefaq.com/> |

Give a shout if you want me to run over to Maid of Scandinavia (3-4 miles) and pick some up for you. -- http://www.jamlady.eboard.com, updated 12-11-05 - Good Food, Good Friends |

The capsules provide a handy way to store it long term. Should be no problem gtting it once you know what to buy. NT |

The candy shop I found had a whole rack of LorAnn oils; good place to keep in mind! -- to respond (OT only), change "spamless.invalid" to "optonline.net" <http://www.thecoffeefaq.com/> |

Didn't see the original post, but for those of you who have access to
Trader Joe's, they have several candy making oils (at least the TJ's in Newport Beach CA on PCH does). I am making hard candy this weekend to give as gifts in decorative glass jars. Terry "Squeaks" Pulliam Burd AAC(F)BV66.0748.CA "If the soup had been as hot as the claret, if the claret had been as old as the bird, and if the bird's breasts had been as full as the waitress's, it would have been a very good dinner." -- Duncan Hines To reply, replace "spaminator" with "cox" |
