Default Kirsch and/or Cherry Brandy

Is buying this "
"Hiram Walker Kirshwasser Cherry Brandy"
available in VA ABC liquor stores

http://www.gobuywine.com/onlinestore...sp?itemid=1174
http://www.abc.state.va.us/Pricelist/CHERRY_BRANDY.html

the same as buying Kirsch listed on recipes.

It would seem so. But I don't know. Any comments?
Thanks,
Dee Dee

It looks like it may be. Kirsh is clear. I have never tried their
Kirsh, but their cherry brandy was horrible, as were all of their
other fruit brandies and liqueurs.

It's not the greatest stuff in the world. It is something that I have tried a few
times and never enjoyed much, except as an ingredient. My comment was based on
some of their Hiram Walker's other fruit brandies that I have tried. There are some
distillers around that make great fruit brandies, but HW is not one of them. Their
cherry brandy tastes like cough syrup. Actually, some cough syrups taste better.

Well, Kirsch IS pretty horrible. Tastes a bit like vodka cut with paintstripper
in my experience. But it sure does spruce up a Black Forest Gateau ;-)

I look upon it as something like Mirin: good for cooking, no good for drinking.
But then, I know of people who _love_ the stuff.

You must not have had really good Kirsch. The really good stuff is
very drinkable.

DH absolutely sets his foot down on buying Mirin. He says its no more than
sweet sake; buy some sake and add a little sugar. I guess the point is --
he/we can drink the sake, but not the Mirin. However, he does think it's
overrated.

Christine, do you have a brand that you recall is drinkable as well as
useable for cooking?
Thanks,

No, I sure don't at the moment.

The last Kirsch I bought was several years ago,and I thought it was
decent. I can't remember if it was St George Spirits, or not. May
have been a different distillery.

The bottle I had before that, was made in Germany, I think. And I
can't even begin to remember the name. It may have been from Alsace,
though. That region excels in the fruit brandies of this nature, and
they are excellent.

I usually just use these for cooking, but I had an old lover who love
to drink my Kirsch straight. I did have some straight, based on his
recommendation, and it was good. Fiery in that brandy sort of way.

This is a good and drinkable brand, although I use it mostly for
cooking/baking.

Thanks Christine & Wayne. I've printed out the page for my shopping notebook
my next trip to the big city liquor store. I'm sure it's great: Alsace,
France. I bought Camembert today. And DH bought some Cotes du Rhone the
other day. I didn't particularly like what he bought, I don't think the
price was tres cher, but it tasted somewhat like Oppicci (sp?) which tastes
like some moonshine has been added to the particular grape that f-i-l
bought - can't remember which now.
Merci.
DeeDee
