SO got me a cream whipper (the thing with the nitrous oxide cartridges),
along with The Silver Spoon. This cookbook is the Italian equivalent of
Joy of Cooking, and it's the first English translation. He had to hunt
down this sucker. Amazon.com was out of it, but the Barnes & Noble in
Bellevue, WA had two copies. He enlisted our next door neighbor, who
works in Bellevue, to pick one up. (Sneaky, sneaky!) My sister sent us
a basket of NY specialties, including a bunch of BBQ sauces from the
Dinosaur Barbecue in Syracuse and buckwheat pancake mix from New Hope
Mills. Mom sent us two quart jars of Mamma Canale's red sauce. In
return, I sent east two tins of Cougar Gold cheese, a couple of packages
of smoked salmon, and some chocolate-covered cherries and blueberries.

Today we went traipsing around downtown (Seattle). Had lunch at the
Athenian Inn. Then we hit Surly Table (that's Sur La Table) and picked
up a tube pan, pie edge protector, and a flour scoop. On our way back
to the car, we stopped at De Laurenti and got sausage for tomorrow
night's feijoada.

On a sadder note, I read on the web that Vincent Schiavelli died. He
wrote "Bruculinu, USA", a recipe-studded memoir of growing up
Italian-American in Brooklyn. He also co-hosted an Italian cooking show
on PBS and was a well-known character actor.
