Well, not frenzy, exactly. More like relaxed puttering, and I'm loving
it.

On the stove is a pot of brown rice simmering in fresh chicken stock,
on which to serve the tofu curry I'll make in a few minutes. In the
oven are a couple of eggplants for the baba ganouj I'm making for
tomorrow's open house. Also gonna make the garlic fondue (with a
sweet batard and some rustic rye to cube and dip, along with some fuji
and granny smith apples), a veggie tray, and some guacamole. Guy's
partner is putting out chips, salsa, soup, cold cuts, drinks, and who
knows what all else -- she usually goes overboard, and who doesn't
love that?

What are y'all cooking tonight?

We had a pretty simple supper, since we were going out later. We had a
salad of cooked, chilled rock shrimp, sliced avocado, and sectioned ruby
grapefruit atop a mix of baby arugula and baby spinach. The dressing was
simply olive oil, lemon juice, and chopped shallot. We heated up a baguette
to accompany it. Very tasty and light.

Later, at our friends' house, we ordered pizza and noshed on Doritos,
Funyons, and assorted chocolates (I brought along the last of Carol's peanut
butter thingies -- the Wheat Thins and PB drenched in chocolate, plus some
sparkling wine and sparkling grape juice). It was a pretty low-key night by
adult standards (though the kids were thrilled...they got to stay up past
midnight, and do the whole horns-hats-streamers-confetti-SillyString
routine).

I should be plotting a great breakfast for hubby and I tomorrow....I'm
counting on the little ones sleeping til at least 11 a.m.

Yesterday I did nothing much - went to a party. I had made Christmas cake
weeks before so the cooking effort was minimal - I haven't felt well
lately.

Today at church coffee hour I saw the cranberry-orange bread and
peppermint bark I dropped off on Christmas eve after the Dec 23 cooking
frenzy. The bread has held up pretty well wrapped and did not taste like
it had been sitting around for a week.

(recipe for Orange-Nut bread on my blog sidebar , no nuts, half a bag of
cranberries chopped up in the FP per loaf ... although I think it would
be better with nuts I left them out for public consumption.)

Today I will be cooking lentil soup - since I have some slab bacon
around, I'm probably going to use it in the soup instead of doing my
regular curried lentil - and starting to make lemon curd out of
all the Meyer lemons I got given by Miss Tammy. It's wet and windy, so I
don't want to go out AT ALL. Relaxed puttering is the order of the day.

Are they Meyer lemons? If so, could I raid the tree for lemons, to
make limoncello?

They are, and yes. I can pick some up at the open house tonight. You
can either pick them up tonight at the party (in San Leandro --
details in email if you like), or you can come by my place or the Bowl
later in the week. Let me know.

It will have to be later in the week. I am heading down to southern
California tomorrow morning, for a few days. I need about 12 lemons.

Thanks so very much!

If the tree has a dozen or so to give up, I'll grab 'em for you. Send
me an email and we can figure out a time to meet.

Charlotte, dahling! Happy New Year to you and I hope you're feeling
better. What do you do for that lentil soup? I love lentils - I made a
vat of 15-bean soup from Beck's Christmas ham bone and added a cup of
lentils towards the end of the cook time. Rob's actually been eating
the soup on his own (as opposed to being subtly coerced) - he's loving
it. I'm thinking about another pot of soup - just lentils this time,
and would like to know how you do yours. I'll be winging mine and will
soon decide what sort of pork I'll use for some meaty flavor.

When Niece Jo and I were in the Vysoky Tatry in Slovakia in 1990 we
spent a night in a mountain cabin with my Cousin The Sonofabitch and his
son, and prepared a lentil concoction over rice for our evening meal.
It was pretty good. My recollection of it is that involved some smoked
sausage, onion, tomatoes, and lentils cooked to a thick stew consistency
(I think the lentils retained their shape) for service over white rice.
Good stuff.

Take care of you.

I probably have 15 times that many on the tree still!! If I drink all
those Delilahs, there's going to be trouble I tell you, trouble with a
capital T and that rhymes with P and that stands for .... ahem. If
you want to meet me in Davis later in the week (Thursday or Friday) I
can give them to you. Or next week even. We could do lunch at that
wonderful Afghani restaurant that I love so much.
