Some people go to extremes to carry, though. In rec.guns, some yahoo once told me that if I wasn't prepared to ditch my entire wardrobe and switch to big bowling shirts, to conceal a too-large gun, then I must be some sort of unpatriotic commie pinko hippy. I suspect he was a shlub, and only bowling shirts were appropriate to cover his blubber. |

An acquaintance of a friend liked to spy on ladies undressing in neighboring houses, using a long distance magnifying device. Most guys would choose binoculars. This idiot used a scope, mounted on a rifle. He was spotted doing this. Apparently, there was nothing the cops could charge him with because he was in his house. I guess "brandishing" means threatening someone outside. And, the gun was empty and trigger-locked. But still, you don't do that with a gun. A month later, the idiot decided he wanted a pistol permit. Here, you need signatures from 3 people who've known you for a certain period of time. The idiot asked someone he thought was still his friend - the husband of one of the ladies he was spying on! :-) She got with the other lady, who called the state police, and told them that the idiot was not competent to be around guns. They followed up, contacted the city cops, found out what had happened, and stopped his application dead in its tracks. This doesn't happen often enough, as far as I'm concerned (permit process stopping morons, instead of just criminals or the mentally ill). |

Oh, ok then. I misunderstood, sorry! I actually LIKE the SW9VE. It's compact, comfortable, performs well and I'm accurate with it. As you pointed out in an earlier post tho', practice is important. Familariarity with your weapon of choice is _most_ important. I HAVE fired a Ruger .45 (borrowed) and it was pretty cool. After practicing with the larger caliber firearms, I often end up with sore forearms the next day but it's worth it. Is the .357 Ruger Redhawk fun to practice with? That goes without saying... I use more .38 ammo tho' as it's cheaper. With that large of a revolver, there does not seem to be a significant difference (at least to me) in the way the gun acts with either round. > > Some people go to extremes to carry, though. It's been more useful for finding what I needed locally. Cheers! > > -- Om. "My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch." -Jack Nicholson |

Over the past few years, I've read in numerous sources that .357 magnum is not all it's cracked up to be, in terms of a defense caliber. Every type of hollow point ammo requires the barrel to be a certain length in order to reach a velocity that'll make the bullet expand. It must expand to do maximum damage. For .357 magnum, the magic barrel length is around 6 inches, which is not something you're going to carry around easily. Same with .44 magnum. There are documented incidents in which unexpanded rounds passed cleanly through bad guys, leaving them still able to do nasty things. The Chuck Taylor book I recommended delves into this subject nicely. You might be better off *always* using .38 specials in your Ruger. |

At least bad hunters thin their own herds. We had six shot here in the first 2 weeks of deer season. One moron shot himself in the knee with a shotgun slug while loading his deer into the back of his truck. Can you count how many safety rules he broke? :-) |

That's not my web page, I just linked to it to give you some info. The 147 gn hollowpoints I bought were about $10 for a box of 50. The 127 gn "Lawman" hollowpoints are generally unavailable to normal people, but if you find them they are not illegal. I've never looked for them so I don't know what they cost. You might look on gunbroker.com. I don't carry; I just started shooting paper targets and falling plates last year for sport. And I'm about to [finally] try learning to shoot a rifle when the weather warms up. If I did carry for self defense, it would probably be my big honkin' .45 Ruger revolver just because I can shoot it /much/ better than I can my 9. Or I'd buy a ..44 Special snubbie. Bob |

If I measured it from the correct point, the barrel is 6.5". It's for home defense only. Way too large to be a carry weapon. It's your basic cannon with a high "oh Sh**" factor for anyone that ends up staring down the wrong end of it. ;-) I keep it loaded with .357 hollowpoints... CCI at the moment, but I want to invest in some Winchester rounds. All in all tho', as much as I enjoy plinking (and hunting on occasion), I really pray that I never, ever have to use a gun for self defense. I'm reasonably sure I could if I had to, but that does not mean I WANT to. -- Om. "My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch." -Jack Nicholson |

With a shot knee, he won't be doing much hunting anytime soon! I was blessed with cool parents. I fired my first BB gun when I was 4 and went from there. Gun safety was (literally) beaten into me from a very young age. My 16 birthday gift was the beautiful Winchester .308 that I still have. :-) Kicks like a mule but it's a fabulous rifle! -- Om. He also discusses which specific kinds of ammo produce the worst muzzle flash, which can blind you at a time when you really need to see clearly. Finding the right stuff isn't a big deal - a few calls to gun shops and that's that. Speaking of blinding someone, get yourself one of these: http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/.../878/sesent/00 ....and buy a box of batteries from the site, too. They're WAY too expensive at gun shops. My son and his friends decided to test that little light, and see if it really blinds a person. It does. They couldn't see well for about 10 minutes. There's an easy way of holding the light in your left hand while still using that hand to support the gun. Again, I think the book shows how. Keep the light with the gun, and don't use it all the time as an all purpose flashlight. |

And I'm about to [finally] try > learning to shoot a rifle when the weather warms up. You will love it. IMHO shooting rifles is easier than pistols! But, I grew up with them so it's easy for me to say that. I used to hate pistols until I learned that size and weight matters! I still cannot hit the broad side of a friggin' barn with that little ..22. The damn thing fits in the palm of my hand. It's just too light! I thought it was me, until I bought the Glock 9mm for dad and fired that. I was dead on with it. :-) So now I know it's the gun. I also had no problem with the SW 9mm I bought for myself. > If I did carry for > self defense, it would probably be my big honkin' .45 Ruger revolver > just because I can shoot it /much/ better than I can my 9. ![]() The latest scam in he Tucson area Malls....- l. Two good looking 18 year old women walk over to your car as you are parking. One starts wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, the other comes to your window saying 'hi' while bending over with her boobs almost coming out of her blouse, and it's impossible not to look. When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say no and beg you for a ride to the Stonestown Mall. You agree and tell them to sit in the back. On the way they start having sex in the back seat. Then one of them performs oral sex on you, while the other one steals your wallet. I was assaulted last Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, but I couldn't find them on Saturday or Sunday. Be careful. <rj> |

ROFL!!!! :-) Actually, something similar tried to happen to me a couple of years ago. Driving through a ritzy part of Rochester, right by George Eastman's old mansion, there's this black lady standing on the corner by a traffic light with a red gasoline can in her hand. It was pouring, so I asked if she needed a lift somewhere. She said she needed to go to a Mobil station which happened to be not out of my way at all. Got there, pulled over, and she says something like "How 'bout I give you a little somethin' special for $20? Pull over behind the gas station." I just laughed and said "Right! How about YOU pay ME?" Yeah. OK. Couldn't get her out of the car. She kept looking for work, if you know what I mean. I finally pulled out into the busy street, with the car diagonally across the yellow line blocking traffic and said "If I stay like this, the cops should get here real quick...." Out she went. |

Scenario:
**I have a gun in my car, you have a gun in your car... all God's chillin' got a gun in the car. Teen gang-banger starts bustin' caps at you for flashing your lights and you return fire equally bent on destruction. Some of your bullets hit their mark- some hit the car... others fly in my direction as i'm riding alongside the gangster car. Wondering why i'm suddenly being shot at by some dude being shot at by some dudes, i'm inspired to pull my own 45 cal. and bang off a few... so off go my bullets whizzing in and out of your automobile, in and out of gangster car and in and out of a few others on the road turning the highway into a snowballing capfest. **Since when does every bullet fired in anger or defense hit it's intended target? **Grow up... get over the power trip of carrying a gun and accept the fact that you're no Dirty F'n Harry and life isn't a vigilanty flick. Kev ====================================== Power trip? Maybe you live somewhere where you don't ever feel uncomfortable that your life could be in danger? People every day in this country get robbed, raped, and murdered just going to buy a carton of milk at the corner store. Your "Scenario" is basically a very unrealistic one. Oh sure, I've heard of the occasional shootouts on California highways some years back. I'd rather have a fighting chance, than let some POS crack head end my life, or a loved one's without any chance of rebuttal. I say it's about time that this country get its head out of its ass, and take away a state's right to allow, or deny gun carry rights. I say it's time to declare war on all the worthless waste of flesh in this country. It's time we stand up, and stand together. Maybe we all need to take a cur from Travis Bickle in "Taxi Driver". The real shame of it is, you can't conceal carry a gun where you really need one. In all non-carry states it's the two legged animals you have to watch out for, not the four legged ones. You never can say what can actually happen in a real life occurence. Just watch something like Super Station WGN at 9, and the typical "shit" that happens every day in a city like Chicago. It could be myself, or someone else one day, the "armed" good samaritan that saves you, and your loved one's life. I'm just so sick of hearing about rotten worthless cocksuckers preying on innocent people, and destroying their lives. Mark |

But, some of us carry for other reasons, and with much more skill. I originally got a handgun at the advice of 3-4 game wardens, who commented that in the remote places where I sometimes hike to go fishing, there are real problems with ferile dogs. More dangerous than bears, although people like to think otherwise. Although I sometimes carry "in town", it's highly unlikely I'd try and stop a bank robbery, unless it was clear that someone's life was threatened, and I could deal with the situation as well as a cop. Incidentally, quite a few cops are pretty lousy in terms of gun handling. |

By the time I became intimate with that part of Rochester in 1990, the elan of East Avenue and the Eastman House area was no more than a spectral overlay held on by wishful thinking. Urban decline had set in long before, and though the region kept up a high-end front, a quick trip through the interiors of properties for sale or rent in the area revealed the carelessness and quick-buck attitude of the owners.
