I know cochineal is made from ground-up beetles. As long as I don't find
any legs in it, it's fine by me.

Wonder why this is news all of a sudden - hasn't it been known a long time
http://www.mbm.net.au/health/100-181.htm
that
"Red colour; made from insects; rarely used; the HASCG recommends to avoid
it, especially hyperactive's, rhinitis sufferers, urticaria, asthmatics and
aspirin sensitive's. Banned in USA."

I'm pretty sure it is legal and fairly common in the U.S.
The FDA has been in an argument with food companies about
whether or not they have to identify it on labels as being
insect sourced.

Naturally Aussies wouldn't think anything of it! They've
been eating grubs since before the world was flat.

I've taken heat for over 30 years from staying away from food coloring
and dyes, additives, preservatives, white flour, sugar, rice, dairy,
meat, pesticides, etc. I used to be a bit preachy about it (in a lame
attempt to educate others) and I"m sure that I alientated people. Over
the years though, I've learned to keep my mouth shut and just live and
let live. When I read articles like this, I just think to myself "and
everyone thought I was crazy." Too many people trust the FDA and
honestly believe that they're doing a great job of watching over us.

I would suggest to anyone disgusted by this to never research what the
U.S government allows in bulk food items. Kev

As someone who has eaten roasted insects for snack as a kid, I wouldn't
think much of it either.

Since I was a scout I knew that bugs could be eaten. I don't have the
phobia that most have about it.

Though I'm sure if I told the SO about the cochineal there'd be a
certaina amount of panic.

I was surprised so few people knew it and were upset by it. I'm amazed we
don't have more food colorings from beetles.

The joke isn't that it's news, it's that it "bugs" him(her). -aem

If their priority was our health they would have completely banned
trans fats years ago.

Thinking before I google ... I wonder if Snopes has the story about
chocolate being allowed to contain a certain percentage of cockroaches,
given that chocolate factories cannot ever be guaranteed to be
cockroach-free.

Hmm... back from a quick snoop round Snopes, and didn't find it ... however,
I found this: http://tinyurl.com/ct2sk

Aaw, have I stopped you reaching for the Fruit'n'Nut?

Default Trans fat - this really bugs me!

BoboBonobo wrote:

As you probably know, new regulations have come into effect recently
that require food labels to list trans fat content. That's great. What
bugs me is that prior to this, I've been dutifully observing guidelines
about saturated/unsaturated fats, thinking I've been doing what I should
to keep my body healthy, when in fact I might have been ingesting
something far worse than saturated fat hidden under the label
"unsaturated fat".

This is maddening - and this is not the first time nor likely to be the
last. Every so often they change their story about what you should or
should not eat, and when they do, you'll discover that in light of the
new guidelines, what you've been doing for years was wrong - very wrong.
Every time I see something like this, I'd imagine that there's a
scientist somewhere wearing an evil grin on his face as he types out the
new guidelines, silently saying to all of us "ha ha, thank you for playing!"

What I would suggest IS to research what you're putting into your
grocery carts and mouthes and stop buying half the crap that you buy.
Bulk foods? The germs alone turn my stomach when I watch parents let
their kids run around opening the lids and stikcing their hands in
them.

Education is a choice. Read through studies, both governmental studies
and independent studies. Read who funded the studies. If a study
talks about how important milk is and how it "does a body good" and is
funded by the American Dairy Council...well DUH. It's easy to blame
the FDA but the bottom line is to take personal responsiblity and do
the research yourself. When my son was born almost 28 years ago, I
decided that there was no way I was going to raise him on a
conventional diet. I did my homework during my pregnancyand have
tweaked my diet since then....not having anything to do with the FDA!

Hey, 3o years ago, I was lobbying for banning cigarettes. In the state
where I live, they just "got it" and have banned smoking in
restaurants. It took 20 years to figure that one out???Gosh, it's
frustrating. The FDA still says that pesticides are fine.

The easiest path to travel is the one that listens to and doesn't
challenge what is fed to us through the media. The fast food
commercials, the commercials for a plethora of unhealthy foods, sugar
laden snacks...oh the long list goes on. Oh gosh, do need to stop
this; I said that I no longer get on soapboxes. I really don't...I
just get so frustrated with the freakin gov't. acting like they care.
I have not one ounce of a scientific brain or mind and I could figure
this all out on my own. The FDA has highly intelligent folks working
there, doing all kinds of testing, etc. And I realized this stuff
decades ago? What's wrong with this picture?

Or never spend time on the floor of a slaughterhouse.

Depends on how they are dispensed. :-)

Most decent "bulk food" places have taken that into account and no
longer have open bins.

The two places I use have "drop dispensors".

A spout that you have to put a container under or a bag under to catch
the stuff as it dispenses using a handle on the side of the bin.

Can't stick your hands in it. No way, no how.

Cheers!

So, avoid foods with food coloring to begin with. It's not so difficult.
