Defnitely. I just wanted to apologize, because I could SEE where this
was heading........into a superlong thread with everyone throwing
insults. Nothing relevant to the actual topic or to any interesting
discussion of food. I withdraw the question. Let's move on. What's for
dinner tonight?

I think we're going to have penne with sun-dried tomato pesto and
ricotta cheese. Green salad with a roasted garlic buttermilk dressing.
Don't know about what kinda veggie on the side, maybe some steamed
broccoli or green peas.

On the other hand, I'm in a potato mood. One of my menus for this week
includes potato kugel with sour cream and applesauce, grandma's cold
peas and cheese salad, and a stew of chickpeas and tomatoes. Maybe I'll
save the pasta for tomorrow.

Either way, there's a pan of peanut-butter bars in the oven right now,
and a pan of white beans simmering in the crockpot. OOh! Ooooh! Those
can be my side alongside the pasta! White beans and green peas with
some Italian seasoning. Thats should be a good balance., I like beans
with pasta.

I bought strawberries yesterday (in the Denver area) from Mexico,
under the Driscoll's label, and they were delicious. Not juicy,
but quite sweet and very flavorful.

I'm curious about "grandma's cold peas and cheese salad." Is it anything
like this (which I got from the "Good Eats" web site)?

Green Peas with Cheese and Herbs

3 quarts water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 pound fresh or frozen peas, approximately 3 cups
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon minced shallot
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons chopped fresh mint leaves
2 teaspoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
4 ounces cheese (ricotta salata, fontina or Swiss), cut into 1/4-inch cubes

In a large covered saucepan over high heat, bring the water and 1/2 teaspoon
of salt to a boil. Add the peas and cook 1 minute for frozen and 3 to 3 1/2
minutes for fresh. Remove from heat, drain in a colander and immediately
plunge the peas into ice cold water to stop the cooking. Drain and set
aside.
In a medium mixing bowl whisk together the red wine vinegar, shallot, salt
and pepper. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil while continuing to whisk. Add
the peas, mint, parsley and cheese and stir to combine. Cover and allow to
sit in refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes prior to serving.

Naw, that's much classier than mine. Sounds delicious - I'll save that
recipe. Actually, the reason I specified "Grandma's" was to give you
visions of a mayo-laden cold salad, 50s style. =)

This recipe is as best I can do; measurements are apporximate. Never
written down the recipe.

Chill 1 can LeSeur baby green peas (these are brand-specific!). I like
the ones with pearl onions in them.

Drain the peas. Mix in about 2 oz sharp cheddar, in very small cubes, 2
- 3 stalks minced celery, sometimes I also add about 1/4 c minced
vidalia onion.

Dress with enough mayo to cover. I very often use half mayo, half plain
yogurt ro up the nutritional value. Sprinkle with about 1 t celery
seed. Salt and pepper to taste. Chill at least 2 hours to get the 'raw
mayo' flavor off the dressing.

At the Berkeley Bowl (in, obviously, Northern California), they're
$1.49 a pint and they're *amazingly sweet*.

Having been much more impressed with out of (local) season asparagus, I tried some
imported strawberries last week. They weren't expensive and they looked pretty good.
They tasted a little better than cardboard. Our local strawberries don't come out
until June, but they are so much tastier than the imported stuff.

I went to the Marin farmers market this morning, and there were
several stalls there selling strawberries. Some of the farmers said
they planted early this year. Many of them were from much farther
south in California. One was from the San Diego area, and another
from the Santa Maria area.
And yes, the strawberries were good: I tasted some from several
stalls. However, one grower said they would be much better in about 2
weeks or so, so I think I will wait to get mine then.

You shop there? i was there once, while on a trip to the US, and I
thought it was heaven on earth. I took pictures of the produce section
because they had so many different kinds of tomatoes. My friend ducked.
He was highly embarrassed but the picture taking.

I miss the farmer's market there. There's something about the drive up
the coast (from San Jose) to go shopping there that was just splendid.
I also miss the rose farms in Half Moon Bay. I cringe every time I go
to buy roses now - we used to drive up specifically to buy them there
and they were incredible.

We have Mexican berries here in Portland right now that are awesome,
running about $2.50/lb. We just polished off a couple of lbs and I'll
be picking more up tomorrow. It's one fruit DS can't get enough of.

Yep. It's walking distance from our place, and it's our regular
grocery store.

Lots of people have their cameras out at the Bowl. I take all my
out-of-town visitors there. It's a spectacle, isn't it?
