Default Tonight's Dinner 09/02/2006

On tonight's menu: salad plate consisting of cucumber cups filled with
a tuna mixture then set on a bed of lettuce accented with fresh
strawberries, a few blueberries, and light splash of balsamic vinegar;
grilled garden pasta garnished with fresh grated motzrella cheese, pine
nuts, and small basil leaves. I'm using capellini pasta with a light
lemony sauce. I'm keeping the bread light so instead of a sliced bread,
I think I will cheese straws. I haven't decided on desert yet but am
leaning towards a strawberry-blueberry ice. My alternate desert idea is
slices of cantelope topped with a very small scoop of ice cream. Drinks
will be club soda spiked with a splash of fresh lemon juice and
garnished with a slice of lemon and mint sprig. After dinner drinks
will be herbal tea with just a touch of honey. I think this meal will
be nice and light but nutritious.

It all sounds lovely, but...I don't understand which part is grilled.

The rich medley of vegetables that are part of the grilled garden pasta
are gilled, hence the name of the dish.

L'Esperance,

Where do you live? It sounds ilke a WONDEFUL dinner, but it sounds
kinda light for the weathere here where I am. It's been about 40
degrees (f) this week and rainy as well. We've been eating soups,
chili, and casseroles!

Sorry, I decline the first question but will explain my menu choices.
DH was on vacation and managed to pack a few extra pounds so I'm helping
him by cooking healthy meals. Most of our meals are very heavy on
vegetables anyway followed by meats, poultry, or fish. Soups, chili,
stews, and roasts are quite the norm here. I'm just paring down any
extra calories while keeping him encouraged with eye pleasing meals that
taste good. Tomorrow night we are having a wonderful fish dinner. I'll
post the details of that meal tomorrow.

Sorry if I'm too personal...but will you give me a continent or
hemisphere, at least, so I can fine-tune my mental picture? =)

How about a planet? Last time I checked it was earth The menu
choice was perfect not too heavy but filling while cutting calories. DH
liked the offerings and so far hasn't asked for an evening snack so all
is well. Check out our dinner plans for tomorrow. I'll post the menu
around lunch time. The theme is seafood

Without being too pushy and intrusive, I want to say that I think you
are in the United States. That is, unless I was mistaken about our
exchange a little while back on the topic of bringing food into the
USA from the Dominican Republic.

Assumptions are funny things and quite often misguided. I'll neither
confirm nor deny your theory. IIRC, the discussion involved DH arriving
home from the Dominican and he brought food. Obviously the food was
good there given his weight gain. *Home* could be just about anywhere
I haven't heard of a country yet that doesn't have some type of
customs screening meaning that wherever home is, the food had to go
through that process. DH had no problems bringing the food home. I
don't feel location is all the relevant to the discussion given the
global nature of the food industry. Most of us can get foods from
countries other than our own simply by shopping online. Speaking of
online shopping, I've checked out a couple of nice sites selling various
hot sauces. It is rather interesting reading all the descriptions!
Ebay has a fairly large selection too. I never realized that some
people *just* collect hot sauce not to use just to display.

Politely requesting a general location of where someone resides is no
invasion of privacy... she didn't even give you the courtesy of a
civilized response... just some loutish snide remark about planets, in
essence a response of SCREW YOU! The smarmy turd owes YOU an apology.

You don't need to apologise Jude. What she is doing is an affectation
to appear more interesting! What on earth does it matter if you say you
are from some country or another.. Pah!! I couldn't care less where she
lives and nor should you and you certainly don't need to
apologise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dear sir, my reply was civil and upbeat. Where I live is of no
bearing to the conversation now or in future. How does me compromising
my privacy in any way change the menu? It doesn't. The meal was
delicious! Be sure to check tonight's menu. I think it will be a success.

Goodness Jude, there is no need to apologize as you certainly did not
offend me at all. As I've said, location matters little to the
discussion at hand. Friends?

I did reply to Jude's post indicating there was no need to apologize.
I'm not trying to appear more interesting or anything but privacy is a
concern. You never know to whom you sharing ideas with on usenet so I'd
rather avoid any problems *before* they happen. I'm posting menus of
what we are eating each night to help keep me motivated in helping DH's
weight loss. Nothing more, nothing less. Where I live doesn't matter
as *most* of what I post could be found worldwide.

Note the timezone in this reply. If things were changed correctly I'm
now somewhere else. It sure is nice to be a globetrotter. Lots of
great food if you know where to go but a little adventure is always a
good thing.

Of course they can, but how many people would think to do so? You're in
the Eastern time zone, and probably the northern hemisphere. It's not
hard to guess what country; there's only a couple of choices and the
difference is not likely relevant. There's no need to get any more
specific unless we start discussing regional dishes. ;-)

They look good, except I don't care much for cucumbers. I do like them
in gazpacho (sp?) or thinly sliced with onions in diluted vinegar (more
as a salad than a pickle)

No it didn't work correctly but that gives me another idea. I'd play
with the timezone corrections but really have more important things to
do. If people have to be so nosey as to know where you are posting from
then perhaps the use of proxy servers is in order. I have nothing to
hide but I will protect my privacy. You still haven't told me how you
like the meals. Last night's meal was quite good. There was something
missing in the grilled vegetable mix that I couldn't quite pin point.
It needed just a little more of something, IMO. It will be a dish to
experiment with a little more.

How right you are O! For a "newbie" around here she seems kinda impolite
- I thought that was a privilege that only the "old timers" enjoy And
I seem to recall she has already been "plonked" at least once today...

This is turning out to be quite a funny discussion for a food related
newsgroup. IME, people are too nosey on newsgroups opening up
unsuspecting posters to all kinds of problems. It is better to
*protect* yourself *before* indulging in newsgroup activities. There is
little point of getting too personal when I haven't even decided if I
will continue posting here. At the moment, posting is serving as a
motivator to cooking low calorie and healthy meals. The time period it
takes for DH's weight loss will likely determine how long I post here
then I'll decide from there.

Oh? Cucumbers appear on my daily menus quite often and I like them for
snacking on.

Yes; about 100 miles away. I went to the 2004 state fair to look at her
entries and was completely intimidated. :-)

Let's see. Calling a spade a spade is impolite? The poster in question
*claimed* to have the *flu* yet his symptoms did not match those of a
respiratory illness but more of a gastrointestinal illness. Then
against sage advice the poster decided to eat something that *stresses*
his body when it is trying to heal then *moans* about the consequences.
The reference to a coffee enema is quite correct in this case. If you
researched the benefits you would see that it would help clean the colon
and restore normal function. Onto the scene comes someone who is almost
as whiney telling me he his plonking me because of offered advice then
saying bye because obviously the OP would rather whine and grace
everyone with his bodily functions *instead* of listening to his body.
My opinion is your body should be treated as a temple. It is the only
one you have and if you *neglect* to listen to its needs, you deserve
exactly what you get.

I think the thing which prompted the curiosity about your location was the
menus you posted, especially the fact that you're serving fresh
strawberries. Here in Northern California (or *am* I really there? :-) local
strawberries won't be available for a couple months, and we're better off
than most of the rest of the Northern Hemisphere. The original query might
have been simply wondering whether you lived south of the equator. Of
course, the possibility exists that you bought those genetically-engineered
red cottony things that masquerade as strawberries in supermarkets. Can't
stand those things myself; if they're not in season and they're not local,
then they're not good enough for my table.

Again with assumptions. Anyone can easily set their timezone to
whatever they want What do you think of the menus so far? The meals
have been very good, full of eye appeal and taste without unneccessary
calories.

I went to Minnesota once. I seem to recall it was somewhere south of
Toronto.

Is this an implication that maybe L'Espérance engages in canning? ;-)

BTW, Minnesota is NOT south of Toronto. The very southern edge of Minnesota
is directly west of Toronto, the rest of Minnesota is at a higher latitude
than Toronto.

Well I think they sound not bad, though not what I would expect from
someone in the depths of a northern hemisphere winter. No ribsticking
soups or braises.

As I said assumptions are generally based on misguided notions. Think
what you want. Keep trying though and you might actually get it but
maybe not since I never post using my correct timezone. Some of you are
so hung up of finding out where someone lives than in hearing what they
have to say. So, any future postings from me will be through proxy
servers at different timezones and I'll change proxies often enough
until those nosey parkers get the hint it's not the location that
matters, it's the food discussion. Better yet, I think chaining the
proxies would provide the privacy while still allowing discussion. Do
you have a *problem* with discussing menus especially those geared to
weight reduction? If so, don't read my posts. If not, take them for
what they are and quit prying into my privacy. Thanks

That's really uncalled for. I think her menu is fine. What the ****

I thought strawberries were in season the end of this month and next?
I lived in central Fla for several years and remember going to the
Strawberry Festival in Plant City sometime during the beginning of
March.

Then again, I did buy some strawberries at Publix last week. They were
from Florida and I wasn't impressed.

I can't remember *exactly* where Barb lives, but I think I'm in her
neck of the woods. Somewhere.

I just re-subscribed to the group after several years away. I notice
the last posts I had "saved" were from 12/99! :-O It's nice to
recognize a few familiar faces.

Well, *I* think anyone who spends so much time attempting to conceal
what *continent* they live on must be seriously in need of a good
tinfoil hat.

What discussion? You mean your "how do you like my dinner menu?"
discussion? You can keep that.
