I plan loosely, in my head, sort of like, "Monday-whole chicken, Tuesday-pork chops, Wednesday-salmon, Thursday-hamburger, Friday-chicken breasts, Saturday-eat out, Sunday-beef roast. But I don't plan a whole menu in advance. I do much of my shopping for meat and staples that won't go bad at CostCo, then do a stop at the regular supermarket for fresh stuff and things I don't need huge amounts of at once. I have a generic list in a Word document containing stuff I buy nearly every shopping trip. I bring that up and add to it as needed, print off and bring with me...but I don't really look at it much and go grocery shopping fairly regularly without my list at all. Hate that when it happens. A computer list may be more difficult if the computer isn't located near the kitchen and nearly always on. Janet |

More or less the same here. More often than not, however, I'll get a hankering for something during the day at work, grab the ingredients I don't have at home and pick them up after work. Some Sundays, when the mood strikes, I'll stroll through Epicurious, my cooking software, a couple of cookbooks, looking for inspiration from the same old, same old. And some days, I just slide by the gourmet take-out place in Laguna Beach and see what looks good. Sometimes, in addition to my previously admitted sloppy planning habits, I wander the market for inspiration to see what looks particularly good for dinner that night or weekend. You'd be surprised how the sight of a well priced brisket or beautifully shaped eggplant can inspire! Depends; if we're doing the "restock the pantry, 'cause by Gawd, we're outta EVERYTHING!" sort of shopping run, then a list is a must. But quite often, I'll go into the grocery with no clearer plan than to find SOMETHING to put together for dinner that night. The latter mode is also very common when visiting the local Whole Paycheck market, since those sorts of trips are more often than not "let's just go and see what they've got that looks good" sorts. I keep meaning to do that, but the one time I DID manage to get such a list made - all the staples, all neatly sorted and ordered by location in the store - but I got it done two weeks my favorite store decided to start a major remodel! I forget..they're just SO darn convenient for everything. Bob M. |

I go there maybe twice a year, and tonight was the night. I wanted cauliflower curry, and Berkeley Bowl doesn't stay open past 8pm (it was 8:40, and Whole Foods stays open until 10). I got cauliflower, curry paste, an onion (wow -- 99 cents a pound at the cheapest! I get onions for 29 cents a pound at the Berkeley Bowl. I was afraid to even look and see how much I paid for the cauliflower.), some Israeli couscous, some soy yogurt, some red lentils, some gardenburgers, some kipper snacks for James, soymilk, and, gosh, a tenth thing, but I can't remember what (I put back a packet of yeast so I could go through the ten-items-or-less aisle). serene, who went in there for cauliflower and curry paste, and ended up spening around $25 |
