Default What should I buy at TJ's?

Well, they fibnally opened the Trader Joe's in Newport News. We're
throwing a cooler in the trunk and heading up there tomorrow to stock
up.

What's your favorite item from TJ's that I shouldn't come home without?

cheap toasted sesame oil. Decent beer/wine. Lots of cool quality
frozen/jarred stuff. Inexpensive saffron.

These are items I NEVER come home without:

If you are a wine drinker, definitely WINE!
If you like chocolate in blocks, definitely Ghiradelli chocolate block @
$3.49# or their TJ's Chocolate 17oz. in a package Belgium Chocolate or
Belgium Chocolate with Almonds.
If you like Nutella, buy their Chocolate Cocoa Hazelnut Butter Spread
If you like oatmeal, buy steelcut oats
If you like 100% spelt bread, their spelt bread is great
If you like 100% juice, I recommend their cranberry -- fierce!

This could send your wallet a reelin'

If you're a baker, I recommend the Rumford non-aluminum baking powder
(large size); King Arthur All-Purpose flour (best price around); organic
dark molasses, organic powdered sugar, organic brown sugar; and the
almond meal. For other culinary endeavors, I find the 29 oz. cans (TJ's
label) of whole, peeled plum tomatoes (I use the no-salt variety) to be
of good quality and a screamin' deal at $ .99 per can. The tomatoes are
not watery like similar supermarket brands, and the juice is well, um,
juicy!

they have different buying offices for TJ's on the east coast, (based in
Boston, I believe) so you may not find the exact same items recommended by
those of us who live in the west.

Try the olive oil
Trader Giotto individual pizzas
frozen peas
frozen string beans
frozen corn
frozen mushrooms (different kinds)
frozen roasted bell peppers
sweet (unsalted) butter is good & at a decent price here in SoCal
Two buck chuck
jalapeno flavored flour tortillas
pet food is also good canned and dry(J J, world famous jack russell terrior
likes it, as does Ms PK the lady manx who rules the house)

I keep reading here that two buck chuck is US$2.99 elsewhere. Too bad,
as the US$1.99 price here is a real deal. It's still a deal, though.

Check out the cheese, if you don't have a good cheese place nearby.
Even if you do, TJ has cheap prices for good stuff.

Something to *not* come home with is the free food. My local store
gives out samples.

OK, I've set up a Paylpal account called 'Send Jude To Trader Joe's".
If each of you would please click the link and deposit your
contribution this afternoon, I can be sure to get all the items on my
list. =)

So far I know I'm looking for lots of good frozen stuff....including
wonderulf potstickers and shu mai and edamame; looking for the jarred
sauces, especially the Thai ones; looking for their cherry jam; olive
oil; dried fruits, nuts, snacking stuff; wine (tow buck chuck is three
dollars at our store); cheeses, including parmesan; their triple ginger
gingersnaps. It's been about a year since I've travelen through an area
where I could do a TJs stock-up, so i'm looking forward to this.

I like their frozen cod (not salted), too.
I used it once with the bag of cioppino to make cioppino.

I've signed up for their emails as well.
One time I was able to buy 5 cheeses that they were having a sale on because
I looked at their flyer -- the one you go on line to review - I believe it
was 42 pages on a .pdf. Otherwise I probably would've passed by these
cheeses, and they were all good, and a good cheese experience.

Black Basil? I've never heard of black basil. Is this a fresh item or a

I just got back from TJ's. Didn't have a list nor anything, just
needed eggs and coffee for a late breakfast. I came home with:

coffee -- they have a good variety of roasts and countries of
origin.
eggs -- extra large for 99 cents; they have fertile and free
range if you want.
butter, unsalted -- they also have salted, both for very good
price. And they have Plugra for special occasions and special baking.
TJ's "Albacore Solid White Tuna" in olive oil -- high quality
product, good price.
TJ's canned corn -- as good as any frozen, better than most canned.
Picatta simmer sauce -- one of TJ's many simmer sauces, all of
which are great cupboard staples for emergencies.

As always, I looked at the scotches and the cabernets. The selection
changes frequently.

As usual, I remembered something on the way home I should have picked
up. In this case, Double Rainbow French Vanilla ice cream. -aem

If they have it - and they don't always - you may want to grab a couple
of packages of the frozen chopped garlic that comes in little trays.
Great stuff. We love their organic sour cream, roasted red peppers
(packed in water), Greek yogurt, canned
artichoke hearts (packed in water), & fresh pesto. Which reminds me -
TJ's always has the best deal around on pine nuts. The frozen Shrimp
Tempura are amazingly good and you can't go home without the frozen
haricots verts. Love their dried pastas - pepperdalle, spinach chive
linguine, and capellini.TJ's frozen asparagus rissotto
is one of my favorite quick meals. Bet $ you'll come home with
daffodils too - always an incredible bargain at TJ's this time of year.
Have fun!

I love the shrimp fried rice
the smooth and mellow coffee is good and just recently I bought a box of
strawberries that are stuffed with a cream cheese filling and then
dipped in white chocolate YUM!

Other than that I buy wine there...some of the dried pastas are really
good. The whole wheat bagels are good. ummm yeah, there's lotsa yummy
stuff! lol Love TJ's (and I go to the one in Newport News -
unfortunatly, if you are going on the weekend you should be prepared for
a crowd....guess it's still a new thing)

I always stock up on their frozen fish filets. They come vacuum sealed
in individual portion sizes, and usually have a good
variety...haddock, roughy, mahi-mahi, etc. Their nuts are great too,
and the huge bars of Belgian chocolate are a great deal.

Dried wild blueberries --- NOT to be confused with

shelved right next to them.

I'm having fresh Haricots Verts tonight & after looking at them, I think I'm
going to stick to TJ's frozen. They are pretty good. Also BJ's have the
baby green beans frozen which are pretty good, too, but they don't taste as
'fresh' as TJ's.

I get their fat-free yogurt.
The Hawaiian-style potato chips are addictive. (blue bag).
I also like their frozen chicken/rice/bean burritos.
The all natural breakfast cereals are all good.
The organic marinara sauce.
The uncured bacon
Ginger beer (ginger ale) strong ginger flavor, very sweet.
An 85% cocoa chocolate bar (by the checkout lanes.
The frozen artichoke hearts in the bags.
Tri-tip sirloin steaks (marinated or not, your choice)!
Frozen tub of guacamole.
Jar of garlic hummis dip
Any of their breads.
Lots of cheeses to choose from.
AND FINALLY... get a frozen mini New York cheesecake OR a LARGE
one!

Have fun.

Your adding the marinara sauce reminds me that I bought a bottle of TJ's
label spaghetti sauce with sausage $2.99. It is much better than the
Victoria w/meat spaghetti sauce that sells for $5.99.

Gee, you must be the eighty-fifth person to ask that here. Ever read

I'm betting your answer to both is a resounding, "NO!"

How can anyone tell you what kind of food items you can't live without?
That question depends on your personal taste. For me, the one item I
must buy at Trader Joe's is their blistered peanuts. Those peanuts are
absolutely fantastic! I like TJ's cheese selection too and the TJ's
frozen meatballs are also a favorite of mine.

Yes. It has various boards including regional boards mostly about
restaurants, a "general topics" board, a "not about food" board (which
sort of is about food), a "home cooking" board and other features. It
gets a good level of traffic.

http://www.chowhound.com/main.html
It's a glorified message board and very popular with foodies.

My Number One most-valued item from Trader Joe's is their Cuban Mojito
simmer sauce. With chicken, pork, or fish, it's a guaranteed Good Meal
(tm). They've also got good tortillas, but that might just be a West-coast
thing. Check to see if they carry pasteurized eggs: The TJ's here used to
carry them, but they got discontinued, and I'm curious as to whether they're
carried on the East Coast.

(I didn't know you were in Newport News! I went to a conference at Langley
AFB just last June, and I used to go on three-month deployments there a
couple times a year. How do you like it there?)

I'm actually in Va Beach, on the other side of the bridge-tunnel. It's
about a 45 minute hike without traffic to Newport News, but for a TJs
pilgirmage once a month or so, it will be worth it.

I like it here, although this time of year I'm bored to death. It's
awful quiet in a beach town come winter!!

Let me know if you end up back here anytime soon. I'll take you to a
great Indian place. Or maybe for some crab cakes and flounder. Or
perhaps to this nice diner I know of.......

That "without traffic" is deceptively innocuous. Under what I consider
"normal" traffic conditions, I'd expect that drive to take about an hour and
a half or more. On one of my first deployments in my current job, I was
living in Newport News and I needed some "dressy" clothes. The only Men's
Wearhouse in the area had just opened in Virginia Beach. Because of
construction and traffic, it ended up being an all-day excursion just to buy
a couple suits and shoes. (Of course NOW there are almost as many Men's
Wearhouses as there are Starbucks!)

I first visited Virginia Beach while I was still in the Navy, in February of
1986, in connection with Tidewater Mensa's "Third Annual Great Dismal Swamp
Regional Gathering." It was one of the most fun-filled weekends I've ever
had! Those people sure know how to have a good time -- and after all,
PEOPLE are the wellspring of most fun, right?

You can count on it!

You know this how... Trader Joes grows their own, on huge CA orchards?

I've never seen any even close to as good as the dried fruit Sun Maid
sells in bulk... not even their own stupidmarket stuff. Odds are
Trader Joes sells Sun Maid's seconds.
