Default Dinner -- a picture, yet again and a dog's tale

http://i1.tinypic.com/nmm5gk.jpg

That's a curry with chicken breast chunks in it. I marinated the
chicken in Thai red curry paste, fish sauce, lime juice, ginger,
turmeric, store-bought curry powder, and cumin. The breasts went into
a baking dish and the remaining marinade went into a pan in which were
sweating mushrooms, diced onion, and a little diced bell pepper. Also
added to the pan: chicken stock, a little more red curry paste, more
ginger, more fish sauce, and some coconut milk. After it was reduced,
I tossed in three kaffir lime leaves, and it became the sauce for the
chicken I'd chunked (post roasting to juicy doneness).

It was an eventful day, fraught with potential tragedy and derring do.
Our old, senile dachshund Nellie (never to be confused with young,
boisterous Lefty) almost drowned in the pool. I was diddling in my
studio when I heard a commotion out back. I checked out the window
and saw D sloshing up the pool steps with a bundle in her hands. The
temp was about 45F outside and the pool water was surely not much
above that. Nellie had apparently fallen in. She has arthritis in
all four legs, and she never was much of a swimmer anyhow. D just
happened to look out the bedroom window in time to see her struggling
in the cold water. By the time I got to any position to help, D was
rubbing Nellie with a big towel in the kitchen. I took over the
rubbing while my woman warrior put on dry things. Eventually, I
switched to a hair drier because the towel was soaked.

Nellie is currently hunkered in a dog bed in front of a small electric
space heater. She's breathing okay now, and isn't shivering any more.
Poor old thing. I think she'll be okay. And what a hero D is!

Sorry about Nellie's episode, but glad she's okay.

The curry looks swell!

Never mind the hound -- how's D? At least you didn't have to do
mouth-to-mouth on Nellie.

I was a bit too optimistic about her breathing in my first post.
She's not at her best yet. I'm certain she got more than a snoot full
of pool water in her before she was rescued. We'll have to keep an
eye on her for the night.

D's hunky dory. She even went to the gym afterwards. However, she
does attest to the coldness of the water.

D quote of the day: "Adrenalin is a wonderful thing."

>mouth-to-mouth on Nellie.

We both were wondering about that. Nellie's got a big mouth. I
suppose I could have used a paper towel roll on her snoot or
something. Or just clamp her jaws closed and blow into her nose.

Most people fence their *yard* (by law) to keep kids from wandering into a
pool, but they don't fence their pool within their fenced in yard.

I'm wondering why the pool wasn't drained and covered for the winter. I
thought most folks did that even in mild climates.

Understand the approach with a small dog or cat should be the same as
for a baby. Very gentle, small breaths. Hellish when something happens
to your pet & glad Nellie is hanging in there. A call to the local
emergency vet might still be a good idea - if she's having breathing
issues, she may benefit from a night on oxygen or need special care -
especially since you said she's an older girl.

Water's too expensive to do that.

It's not uncommon for an animal to get pneumonia after a near drowning
episode...

A trip to the vet might be in order, unless you have antibiotics on hand?

No kidding... :-(
I've cut my gardening efforts quite a bit after a couple of summers of
high water bills.

It's cheaper to BUY organic veggies than the cost of the water to grow
them!

That's one of the major reasons I'm looking into hydroponics. Minimizes
water losses as it's a circulating system so water is conserved.

I got it too and I'm very happy with it.

Best thing to do for that kind of bill is refinance and put it into a
home improvement loan.

I'll be hopefully posting a pic of yesterday's stir fry on ABF here in a
bit. I have to take them off the camera, shrink and edit them. Even at 1
mp setting, the pics straight off the cameray are over 400k.

You're right. Her breathing was labored last night at bed time, but
she appears to be okay this morning. We'll be sure to watch her
closely today.

I think Dan is in Southern California. But when I lived there in 1968 we
got snow in Vista, so yes, it's possible to have winter even there!

I grew up in Southern California, but after age 12, we moved up to the
mountains at 6,000 ft. so did have snow.

If he lives close to the coast, he will basically have no winter. ;-)

I love the west coast...... <sigh> The gulf is SO polluted.

Northern California. We usually get some hard frosts here, but if it's
sunny, it warms up during the day. It's gotten up close to 70 lately.
My daffodils are in full bloom.

Dang, here in Florida we have a possibility of some snowflakes this morning.
It's 27 degrees! Unfortunately, due to the cold, our blueberry and
strawberry crops are getting affected. Be prepared for the chance that
strawberries and blueberries may be a little more pricey this season! I'd
assume it would affect oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit as well. :-(

Neat. :-)

Pansy and paperwhites are blooming around here, but we just had a hard
freeze over the weekend.

Don't know about other places, but around here (central Florida) the
water table can be so high that a drained pool can try to float out of
the ground and crack. If we need to drain for any kind of maintenance
or repair, we have to keep the pumps going to locally (and
temporarily) lower the water table with lots of permits and
restrictions).
