Default Ideas for Leftover Chinese "BBQ"?

It's actually pieces of chopped pork in a tangy sweet & sour sauce. We
ordered the ribs but they called back and said they were out of ribs, did we
want the boneless BBQ? Sure, why not? Oddly, it was less expensive than if
they'd sent us a box of bones with some meat on them

I've got about a half a carton of this pork left and no extra sauce. I'm
not sure what, if anything, I can do with this other than nuke it and snack
on it. Since I've been out of town I don't have any fresh veggies on hand.
The only Asian canned veggie I have is sliced bamboo shoots. I thought I
had some sliced water chestnuts but no go. I have a small jar of sliced
button mushrooms. I'm sadly lacking in any sort of Asian sauces other than
teriyaki since I don't often cook Asian style food. Would teriyaki clash
with the sweet/sour sauce the meat was already cooked in?

I really don't feel like driving to the store just to get stuff to use up
this little bit of meat. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I thought of that. But using already cooked pork in a stir-fry would
probably result in tough pieces of pork even if they were added at the last
minute. Plus - canned veggies in a stir-fry? Hmmm. I've only ever used
fresh. Thanks, though.

Bamboo shoots sound fine... And the canned mushrooms.

Scramble up a couple of eggs and add those, and serve over some rice or
noodles.

IMHO S&S sauce will blend fine with extra soy or teryaki sauce. :-)

This reminds me of a story at www.theonion.com, about a man who was having a
major personal crisis. Over a period of years, he'd collected too many
ketchup packets from fast food restaurants, and didn't know what to do with
them.

I have used canned veggies, but limit it to mushrooms, baby corn, water
chestnuts and bamboo shoots. I prefer fresh mushrooms but the canned
straw mushrooms are convenient when I'm short on time! I dump them into
a screen strainer and rinse them to reduce the salt a bit.

Apparently not knowing what to do with leftover well-seasoned sweet & sour
pork strikes you as a personal crisis. I call it "I don't usually have
leftover Chinese pork".

Bamboo shoots would be okay with the pork, but I don't think that canned
mushrooms or teriyaki would go very well.

Rather than the suggested fried rice, I'd consider making some kind of
stuffed-dough thing with the pork. There are lots of different directions
this can take: You can use soaked rice paper wrappers and make summer rolls
(though you probably don't have the ingredients for that). You can make
biscuit dough, encase the pork, and bake. You can make bread dough, encase
the pork, and bake or steam. You can use puff pastry or phyllo dough. You
can use refrigerated croissant dough-in-a-tube.

Alternatively, you can add the pork to egg foo yung.

In any of those cases, you can add the bamboo shoots or leave them out. Do
you have any canned pineapple? That would go well with the pork too.

I'd snack on it cold. But if you want to be civilized about it ...
hmmm ... you could use it to fill an omelet or top a baked potato.

Yeah, right. Then you would have said so... you didn't think of
anything, to wit: "I'm not sure what, if anything, I can do with it
other than nuke it and snack on it ".

> But using already cooked pork in a stir-fry would probably result

And exactly what pork do you think Chinese restaurants use to make pork
fried rice.... they dice already roasted slabs of pork and add it at
the end... do you really think they stir fry tiny dice of raw pork.
DUH! In fact all the ingredients are added after the rice has already
been substantially fried (and Chinese restaurants in fact use a lot of
oriental canned veggies in all their dishes; baby corn, bamboo shoots,
water chestnuts, straw mushrooms, etc. small canned shrimp too).
You've obviously never made your own or seen fried rice being made...
you were obviously so focused on attempting to negate my offering that
you presented yourself as a fool. I know there are no Chinese
restaurants in all Tennessee... pork fly glits! <G>

I don't have canned pineapple but I do have a can of mixed "tropical" fruit.
I think I'll save the pork for tomorrow when I've had time to think about it
a bit more.

Jill, I feel your pain. Really, I do. I have some sauerkraut in the fridge.
Not enough for a proper Reuben sandwich, not even enough for a hot dog, but
too much to want to throw away. It's a tough thing to deal with. <sniff>
Pass the kleenex.

Jill, are you gonna be OK? Find some quiet time tonight. Light some candles,
and search the depths of your soul for a solution to this pork problem - a
solution you'll be able to live with weeks, months and years from now.
Otherwise, it'll haunt you forever.

I'm here if you need to talk.

Hmm. I think Doug was gently teasing. "The Onion" is satire and I
think he was just referring to one of their joke articles.

I always use left-over cooked pork in fried rice! I can't imagine using
fresh. You just throw it in at the end. I have some smoked pulled pork
that's "musgovian" I'm going to use up today for this very thing.

Oooooh, egg foo yung! That's an excellent idea! I haven't made that in a
couple of years; I think I'm due. I have pulled pork leftovers; instead of
fried rice, I may do egg foo yung. I even have sherry for the sauce. All I
need are bean sprouts, but I have to make a store run anyway. Good call,
Bob.

Another excellent suggestion, Michael. Ummmmm, ramen (Homer Simpson). I

Yeah, I realized that after my post. I don't read stuff on "The Onion"
since even my pop-up blocker can't get rid of the embedded advertisements
that come up on the screen when you're in the middle of reading something.
I was having an off day yesterday. Sorry, Doug!

Heh, Jill could if she had egg roll wrappers or wonton wrappers, which she
doesn't! I think I'll try to make some homemade "Hot Pockets" using the
pork. I'm not in the mood for stir fry, fried rice or noodles at this
point.

You cannot help using leftover BBQ pork in fried rice. Remember, it is
cooked - BBQed - first, and unless you are lucky enough to be at a
restaurant that makes their own, it is always a leftover.

Now I am thinking about wandering around Chinatown in Toronto and looking at
all the BBQ pork and ducks hanging in the windows. Saliva glands, do your
thing!
