Hi Jill,
I mentioned a short time ago (in the "restaurant" thread) that I tip for carryout, but a lesser amount than when I eat in the restaurant -- and have never been sure just what is appropriate. Someone replied that it is not necessary to tip for takeout because the wait staff does not work on that. On the other hand, *someone* obviously has to box it up. Can you tell me what is considered appropriate, or is the other poster correct? Any tip obviously should go to the person who puts in the work and not simply the person who carries the package out of the kitchen. Also: Is it of any importance to servers whether the tip is on the credit card or cash on the table? I have done it both ways but have never been sure which would be preferable. Thanks, MaryL |

No paper trail for the IRS to follow. Having said that, servers are taxed on a percentage of their sales, not on what goes into their pockets. Never could get Dad to understand that. But it's easier to go get a drink and put your feet up after work if you have cash in your pocket ![]() |

I always tip, so now it will be cash even when I use a credit card for the meal. (And now I can save a little money on takeout since that doesn't need a tip!) MaryL |
