Kewl, this made it into a separate thread.

Your approach would work of course. BUT... they don't sell dry ice
here and I didn't have a cooler. My interest is really in living in an
everyday modern home and having to make do without any kind a cooling
options. I am bringing the modern home into it because that is my
reality and I think it is most people's. People on old farms might have
more cool storage options.

Some options I can think of for cooking foods using ingredients that
don't need refrigeration:

sauces using canned tomatoes and fresh veg, served with pasta
dry cured meats in pasta sauces
soups using pulses and vegetables (but what to do with the
near-inevitable leftovers in small households?)
pancakes using long life milk and fried in oil or some other replacement
for perishable butter
fried potatoes
omelets
pasta puttanesca
bacalao dishes
