Since we can't know what the original tasted like how are we supposed to
help? I will mention that caraway seeds are a popular addition to
cabbage dishes - might be worth throwing in a tsp or so.

I thought that maybe a sweet-sour result was desired but there does seem
to be too much sour.

It almost seems like a weird "cure" for a hangover, which works only because
it's so odd that it takes your mind off the pain for as long as you're
eating it.

He said they were experimenting and the result wasn't as expected, so
you may be right. I would think you'd need some lemon to counter the
sweetness of the apple.

Practice safe eating. Always use condiments.

Gross! Every time I hear of a cabbage soup recipe it reminds me of the
cabbage soup diet I went on -- not once, but twice. I will never again eat
cabbage soup!
