Default cabbage soup

my sister lia and me are trying to recreate my grandmums wonderful
cabbage soup. from memory as she (my grandmum not lia!) passed away
and we dont have this written down. after much trial and error and
eating our mistakes we stil dont have it right. can someone please
review?

3-4 lbs cabbage
a few ribs
5-6 lemons
2-3 green apples depending on size
1/2 cup rice but not cooked
3 small cans of tomato sauce
1big onion
1/2 cup cider vinegar

and the following as you see fit
a small handful of raisins
pinch of sugar
maybe tablespoon of salt (but maybe less)
some black pepper

we started with some marthastewart.com lists and worked around them a
little . but it still doesnt taste right? HELP!
