Stew Leonard's World's Largest Dairy Store near Penzey's

In the USA article posted earlier today, I clicked on Stew Leonard's.

"Like any good tourist trap, Stew's is set up so you can only move in one
direction, past every item, before you reach the exit."

We go right by this place in Norwalk, CT to F-I-L's . It looks like it's
only a block or on the same block as Penzey's.

The two stores are very close. I live in the Philadelphia area, but I
have been to Stew Leonard's twice and I loved it. I would have stopped
by the Penzey's store too, but it seems to be closed on the rare times I
drive through that area.

Penzey's closes by 5, IIRC, on Saturdays, when I am most likely going
in that direction.

I do not share your admiration for Stew Leonard's though and agree
with it being a tourist trap. Their prices are not particularly
reasonable, their bakery department lacking, produce like most regular
supermarkets, their prepared foods have not proven themselves with me
or mine. I went there 3-4 times, and it is a hoot to see it, but the
parking is maniacal and I just don't think it's worth it.

Penzey's is worth it.

Perhaps Penzey's closes by 5 on all days. DH went one day driving thru
Norwalk and he said it was closing up, but was able to get a few things
before it did close.

I thought perhaps Stew Leonard's might have some not ULTRApasteurized cream.
Perhaps the "Dairy Store" is just a name, not in reality? I still have not
found any regular pasteurized cream; only the ULTRApasteurized. TJ's in my
area - not!
Thanks,
Dee Dee

It used to be a real dairy store. Leonard started out as dairy store and the
groceries and stuff was added over time. You used to be able to watch the
milk being bottled on site. I've not been there in some years so I don't
know if they still do that.

I think the kids run the three stores now. Last I heard of the old man he
was carrying bags of cash out of the US to some island and got caught.

Ever been on hold & listened to their "on hold" music.
Just enough to drive anybody insane.

I assume you are speaking of Stew's?

One time we were going on a trip and had a travel-agent woman making
arrangements for us -- each day when we asked her if she had made the
airline reservations, she would say no, that she just couldn't hold on the
line any longer because they were playing classical music and she couldn't
stand classical music.

It isn't classical music is it? Tee hee.
