I can beat that -- last week Treasure Island here in Chicawgo (my main store) had skin - on, bone - in breast for .$.79/pound. At times boneless, skinless breasts have been $.99/pound. Been eatin' LOTS of chicken... A month ago chicken quarters were $.25/lb., I bought about 25 pounds...sauteed them all, picked off the meat to freeze and used the bones for stock. This week they're on sale for $.39 so I'll get maybe 10 pounds and do the same thing...we/ve got the whole chickens for $.49/pound here too. Chicken and pork have been pretty cheap. Beef has generally been so expensive that I can't remember the last time I bought it...why so expensive? Other stuff: - Butter, last week was $1.50 - $2.00/lb at Treasure Island and Jewel (Safeway) respectively...that's as low as I've ever seen it.... - Eggs have been as low as $.39/dozen... - Common cheese has been fairly cheap, milk is reasonable. Is dairy stuff coming down in price? - Red bell peppers. For some reason nice ones have often been available for $.99/lb at TI... - Orange juice. Has been very cheap all these last months, Tropicana has been as low as $2.00/half gallon, Florida's Best or eqv brands have been 3/$5.00 Interesting because citrus itself has not been a huge bargain... - Produce in general is cheaper than it was. After the hurricanes and bad weather in CA some stuff was really sky - high last fall/winter. Canned and frozen veg is more reasonable now... > Must be turning over the stock of birdies. "Off with their heads!" Man I miss Cub. I shopped them when I lived in Des Moines and Indy, and they always had the best produce and meats. We have Winco here, but their produce isn't nearly as good. -L. |

What was found in many of the chopped meats such as beef, veal, pork, chicken and turkey were ground up bones, gristle, skin, tendons and other meat by-products and also lots and lots of fat. There is no need for that. You can ask the butcher in your store or supermarket to take a piece of meat of your choice that is on sale and have it ground for you. You can ask her/him to remove the fat or let it go through the grinder twice or whatever else you want. Bottom round is frequently on sale for $.99 a pound and top round for $1.99 at Morton Williams/Associated, for example. |

The only place I know of that has one is the Mexican meat market about 20 minutes away. They'll cut anything you like, however you like. As for most major supermarket chains, I can't recall ever seeing an on duty butcher; just a stock person who loads up the coolers if they get empty. kili |

That'd be your "Easter's just around the corner" season promo. (Orthodox Easter is coming up this Sunday -- and guess who got an invite to dinner at the home of the worst cook in the family?? It's also my 40th wedding anniversary. What we both put up with. . . . ) (*^;*) > - Common cheese has been fairly cheap, milk is reasonable. Is dairy > stuff coming down in price? But common cheese is, well, for common people, Greg. ;-) I don't know about dairy. I think I need to talk to the guy who used to be the farm prices guy on the local big radio station until they decided they didn't care if the farmers listened to them for the livestock reports or didn't and sent him packing. But I digress. > > Must be turning over the stock of birdies. "Off with their heads!" > "A chicken in every pot is worth a bird in the hand..." "-) We now live in an age of Starter Marriages and Throwaway Spouses and the disintegration of the family unit. That's not what we signed up for. There've been bumps and potholes but we laugh and say that neither of us is interested in breaking in someone new. I'm always amazed by the people who are impressed with anyone who's been married longer than, say, 8 years. I always figured I'd only marry once. -- -Barb <http://jamlady.eboard.com> Updated 4-17-2006 with Easter stuffs. "If it's not worth doing to excess, it's not worth doing at all." |

He's a good man, a wonderful father, and a great Grandpa. Not a Great-Grandpa. '-) { Exported from MasterCook Mac } Bloomer Droppers Recipe By: Posted again to rfc by Barb Schaller, 4-20-0=2006 Preparation Time: 0:00 Categories: Beverages Amount Measure Ingredient Preparation Method 6 ounces lemonade concentrate 6 ounces vodka 18 ounces water 1 peach powdered sugar Blend together and freeze for slush drink. Four times the recipe will fill an ice cream bucket. ‹‹‹‹‹ From CDKitchen.com (Hi, Val!!) Better Than Sex Cake 1 box dark chocolate cake mix 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1 jar (12 oz) Mrs Richardson's caramel topping 8 ounces whipped topping (Extra Creamy Dream Whip is good) 2 Heath candy bars, crushed (or Nestle's Heath bits, if you can find them) Bake the cake as directed. As soon as it comes out of the oven, poke holes all over it with a fork (I actually use a small diameter chop stick) and pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over the cake, followed by caramel sauce (microwaved about one minute until warm and easily pourable - I use only about 10 oz of the jar). Refrigerate overnight. Shortly before serving, spread whipped topping over cake and sprinkle with crushed Heath bars (or bits). Enjoy. This recipe for Better Than Sex Cake serves/makes 10. _____ And from Cooks.com: NEXT BEST THING TO ROBERT REDFORD DESSERT (Redford? Feh. It's me and Harry.) 1 1/2 c. flour 1 1/2 sticks butter 1/2 c. finely chopped pecans 2ND LAYER: 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese 1 c. powdered sugar 2 c. Cool Whip 3RD LAYER: 2 (3 oz.) pkgs. instant pudding (chocolate) 3 c. cold milk 4TH LAYER: 1 lg. carton Cool Whip (minus the 2 c. used for 2nd layer) Mix flour and butter and press into bottom of 9 x 13 inch pan. Bake 20 minutes at 325 degrees. Cool completely. Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar and 2 cups Cool Whip with mix and spread over cooled crust. Refrigerate. Mix pudding mix with milk and pour over cream cheese layer. Cover top with remaining Cool Whip. Decorate with shaved chocolate or sprinkles, finely chopped pecans or toasted coconut. Refrigerate. Serves: 12 to 15. -- -Barb <http://jamlady.eboard.com> Updated 4-17-2006 with Easter stuffs. "If it's not worth doing to excess, it's not worth doing at all." |

And I can't ever find any wings/necks/pieces parts for making stock, so I guess they don't sell them. The pre-packaged pre-seasoned pre-cooked Tyson chicken this week was half the price of the fresh chicken. Made me want to cry. Nothing is ever cheap here in Kansas. They ship out the good stuff to you guys and we're left with the crap. The little bit of good meat or produce left behind costs an arm and a leg. I suppose I could live on fish fingers and Tuna Helper, but I'd like to not die before I'm 40. Stacia super jealous |
