Hi,
Back when I was a regular poster, I was subscribed to RFC through a
news service that showed up on my Outlook Express as news.cis.dfn.de.
In the interim time my computer went down (to hell for further
instructions) the news service went from free to minimal payment. I
lost the information on how to re-subscribe to this service.

My question is this, do any of you have this information? Do any of
you use a newsserver that is of good quality and of little cost? My
ISP that I have my internet service through doesn't access RFC or I
would go back to them.

Help.....Googling everytime I want to see what's up is a pain in the
patootie (shut up Sheldon). I want to get back in the swing of things,
but this is ridiculous.

Thanks,
Ginny

For text groups (can't help with binaries):

The German server you used is he http://news.individual.net/
I used it when it was free, but have no experience of the for-cost option.

I now use http://www.teranews.com/
It can be painfully slow at times, but I've found few missing posts.
There's a free option that is limited to 50MB/day downloaded (including
headers).

It is news.individual.net and the cost is 10EU/year. I just renewed
and was about $13/year US.

You can always ask your ISP to add RFC. Some of them are very good
about adding.

I'm not sure, but it might be individual.net, because at some point,
people seemed to have stopped pointing to the above server, and to
individual.net, and that's what I have. It's 10 euros a year (was
about $13 last year, but about twice that this year).

Hi, Ginny - welcome back! It has been quite a while.

I use news.individual.net also, Ginny, and it's pretty good. As another
poster said, 10 EU or about $12.50 U.S. A variety of other servers are
being used by others; I'm sure you will hear from them.

Say what? Here's what hit my card last week: $ 12.46. (That's for a
year.)

Try news.individual.net and follow the instructions for payment.. I
find it well worth $12 a year (~my most recent charge for a year).
Nothing changed AFAICS except that they can no longer do it for free.
Some stuff (usually the OP) gets lost sometimes (I'll see replies to the
OP but not the OP) but I'm okay with it.

The 10Euro charge comes through Clickandbuy.com.

That stuff doesn't really get lost. It is invariably bona-fide
cancellable spam which actually gets cancelled by despammers or filtered
out by the newsserver. The followups you see are those of the morons
who use inferior newsservers that don't honour cancels and who insist on
replying to every rubbish on the newsgroup, being just as bad as the
spammers.

The euro must've been in a whole different place when mine went
through a month or two ago. I'll go double-check, but I think it was
around $24.

Gosh, you're right. They double-charged me. I bought a membership for
a friend last year, and I bet they renewed it automatically. Shows me
I should read my invoices more carefully. Thanks!

So that's what that was for! I'm on the phone with the fraud
department for my bank so they don't continue their investigation
into the charge. Damn! Thanks for this info!

I just checked the email message I received and the amount or 4/8/06
is $12.46. Worth every penny.

You don't find Earthlink's servers acceptable?

People complain on the EL Usenet group all the time about the East or West
servers being down but I've never had a problem. For some reason some
threads don't propagate to EL but I can always catch those on Google...

Hmmm - just looked at my bill again - $12.54. You'd think it would be
the same for everyone.

This is one of those times when you get what you pay for. I had to use
Google for the first part of 2005, and it was draining experience. I
basically dropped all but the most important technical groups because
reading took forever.

For what you get, news.individual.net is a pretty good value.

Mine was $12.56. Maybe they were done on different days, and the
conversion wasn't the same from day to day.

okay, so I have a different, if somewhat related question....
I access the newsgroups for free through my cable internet service. Is there a
benefit to the pay services that i don't know about or is it just rare that
the service is free.

The only newsgroup I read is this one so i guess it never occured to me to
investigate further.

I would guess that the exchange rate changes daily, sometimes more than

When I first signed on with Earthlink, I used their servers. Lots of
trouble (5 years ago) so I switched. I've stayed switched.

I agree (and there will always be whiners). I used EL when I was on
dialup and I was very satisfied with their news servers. If they
could get a toehold into the cable market here, I'd still use them.

If you're satisfied with the service and you can get the groups you
want, there's no need to look elsewhere. Why pay when you don't have
to?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Some servers don't carry groups people want. Some servers don't offer
binary newsgroups. Some servers leave the messages available longer
than others.

Breakfast Sausage Bread

Recipe By: posted to rec.food.cooking by Barb Schaller, 4-20-2006
Serving Size: 12
Preparation Time: 0:00
Categories: Entrees

Amount Measure Ingredient Preparation Method
2 loaves frozen white bread dough (1 pound each)
thawed
1/2 pound mild pork sausage
1/2 pound hot pork sausage
1 1/2 cups diced fresh mushrooms
1/2 cup chopped onion
3 eggs
2 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (10 oz)
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
1 teaspoon dried rosemary crushed
1 teaspoon garlic powder

Allow dough to rise until nearly doubled. Meanwhile, in a skillet over
medium heat, cook and crumble sausage. Add mushrooms and onion. Cook
and stir until the sausage is browned and vegetables are tender. Drain;
cool. Beat 1 egg; set aside. To sausage mixture, add 2 eggs, cheese,
and seasonings and mix well. Roll each loaf of dough into a 12x61 inch
rectangle. Spread half the sausage mixture on each loaf to within one
inch of edges. Roll jelly-roll style, starting at narrow end; seal
edges. Place on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 25
minutes; brush with beaten egg. Bake 5-10 minutes more or until golden
brown. Serve warm. Makes 2 loaves.

We've had EL for about 8 years, and though I've been tempted to switch to
save a few bucks, (always someone coming around a few $ less per month) I
stayed because it's just been so damn reliable. In that time we had one day
when email was not working, and a minor glitch when they went to east west
news servers, but other than that, it's been rock solid. DSL is twice as
fast as the published speed (probably because we're about a mile from the
phone terminal) and it is always up.

Although the newsgroup retention is only 30 days, this really is not a
problem for casual newsgroups like this one.

Your mileage may vary

Earthlink's Usenet service has been steadily declining for years. It's
been over a year since they added any groups; so what you see is what
you'll get. I don't use the binary groups and most of the text groups I
read have large holes of missing posts; way too many to make using
Google feasible (I hate web interfaces).

I don't have many high speed choices where I am and, other than Usenet,
I'm happy with Earthlink. So, I supplement. I'm currently using
Teranews, but it's getting annoying enough that I'm considering going
back to Individual.net.

Re 1 - Next time I come upon one, I'll let you know. Maybe I haven't
been paying attention to the part about crossposting. I'm not up for a
research project right now.

Re 2 - :-P yourself, Bucko! I love a wiseass.

Re 3 - The most likely of the three options. Pfftthhggbbttt!

OB Food: Ham from Kramarczuk's (story posted on my website, link below)
was way too salty!! Holy moley -- in comparison to Ingebretsen's
house-smoked ham -- there's no comparison. What do Scandinavians know
about smoked meat? That's not their thing, is it?

It most certainly is. See, for example,
<http://www.foodiesite.com/articles/2000-09/scandanavian.jsp>. Scroll
down to "Meat" and to "Game".
