Default San Diego/OC Cookin - Alcohol, Anyone?

Man, oh man, we just got back from a weekend trip to Catalina Island.
Had drinks Saturday night at Mi Casita (yum!) and was introduced to an
alcoholic delight I'd never heard of befo Cazuela. It's one of
those concoctions that remind me of tropical drinks that get you
plastered before you know it, but... I got the recipe out of the
bartender and we are SO having Cazuela punch at the June 10 San
Diego/OC cookin!

Anyone in the Sandy Eggo/Orange County vicinity: y'all come!

Forget the fire ants..come to the cook-in... If you drink enough,
you won't care about any fire ants.

That is very bad form old chap. These things are not supposed to be
discussed until after the cook-in. Perhaps you are not aware of RFC Cook-In
traditions.

I was talking about the recipe. It really isn't important, it is just an old
tradition not to discuss these things before a Cook-In. These traditions,
like me, are old-fashioned these days. I actually very much enjoyed the
"punch up" bit.

The way it used to work is that what people were bringing to a cook-in was a
secret. The provisions from our groaning table were posted to RFC along with
the personal recipes of their makers. This has all gone by the wayside these
days. I'm just an old git who lurves traditions.

Actually it was Terry who breached tradition and not you! You are innocent
of the crime I accused you with. I should have seen this immediately! <I
have now hung my head in shame for a full 3 seconds> Terry is an imp. There
is a statue of her in Lincoln Cathedral, UK.

Not true! I've lived here most of my life and I've never seen one. I don't
think they are a part of our ecosystem. At least in Sandy Eggo.

I understand. I have live almost all my life in Southern California. I don't
really understand the cultures of people who live in other US states. I
only feel at home in Southern California and in Ireland.

Previously I wrote: "London is the center of the Universe". To which you
replied:

> Who told you *that* crap???!!! It'd be a good place, but there's too
> many Poms there!!

Actually it was my own determination! I love London and have spent many a
vacation there. I used to visit yearly, usually on my way to visit family in
Ireland. Anything one could want (almost) can be found in London. As to the
"Poms" comment, I have often been told that if I like London, I would love
New York. New York is full of New Yorkers which would be unpleasand. I am
sure that they are nice people, but their voices and loudness drives me
crazy. I once flew with another couple from Shannon to New York and our
flight was late so we missed our connections. Aer Lingus put us up at a very
nice hotel for the night. The other Irish couple and I were in pain and
frightened by the inhabitants when we went out for a drink and dinner! None
of us were used to the decible level nor the barely recognizable English. I
am sure the other couple were happy the next day to be in the quieter
Minneapolis. I was certainly glad to be back in San Diego! The English,
Irish, and SoCalifornians all have softer voices. For me, some English and
Irish dialects are difficult but expected. I have long been a supporter of
the complete political separation of California from the rest of the U.S.

That is encouraging! The flight from Sandy Eggo to London was 11 hours until
they canceled it as they can't get the big planes into our little airport. I
suppose I could last 15 hours. I would probably opt for SD to Honolulu to
Australia. I don't much like the LA airport.

Sydney is now a (slightly) smaller version of LA. I love the multi cultural
mix because that means a whole lot of different food styles to try, but
unfortunately, a lot of the different culture that are in Sydney, think
they are still back home in their own country. Which leads to a lot of non-
assimilation = trouble. There are now 'no-go' areas of Sydney were
Aussies/whites can't walk through without fear of assault or murder.Much
like Watts (which used to be an all-black area, but has changed to latino
of late), South Central etc......... unless they've *all* changed in the
last 10 years!!

You can't outrun Margaret because she is no longer human; she's turned
into a car. See <http://website.lineone.net/~dr.dub/suranar.jpg>.

ObFood: Pickled offal of suckling pig. The recipe is from _Hungarian
Cookery Book_ by Károly Gundel.

Victor

Pickled Offal of Suckling Pig
(Savanyú malacaprólék)

1 1/2 kg - 3 lb offal (feet, ears, etc.) of suckling pig
80 g - 3 oz fat
60 g - 2 1/2 oz flour
60 g - 2 1/2 oz onions
150 ml - 1/4 pt sour cream
1/2 lemon
20 g - 3/4 oz salt
20 g - 3/4 oz sugar
20 g - 3/4 oz mustard
dash of pepper
1 bay leaf

Wash the offal well, cut into 50 g -2 oz pieces and cook in 1 litre - 1
3/4 pt of water. When it starts to boil, remove the scum, add salt and
the bay leaf, and cook until tender. Make a light brown roux from the
fat and flour, brown the finely chopped onions lightly with the grated
lemon rind. Add a little cold water and pour on the meat. Add the
mustard, sour cream, sugar, pepper and the lemon juice. Boil for ten
more minutes. Serve with rice or tarhonya.

Contrary to what many say, California was never really governed by Mexico.
Mexico had sovernty over California for only 20 years. Even during that
short time, most top government officials in California were still Spanish.
Any decent history book will show this. The real influx of Mexicans in any
number happened only after 1900......mostly after 1940.

Just as an aside, I have enjoyed our conversation!

Just did a bit of research into the subject. When I was living in CA
(early to mid '90's) I thought it was just an immigration problem with
all the runners trying for a chunk of the US $$'s.
But after reading this........

http://www.limitstogrowth.org/WEB-text/aztlan.html

it sounds like there may be another Alamo coming up!!

My solution to appease them and ease the current situation is to give
them back Texass

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_American_War

........ because the only thing to come out of Texass are steers,
queers,and republicans!!

Likewise :-)

You'll have to take photos of the 'cook-in-punch up' and post them where
we can all see what y'all get up to :-)

You probably mean "dangle a Pastrami on Jewish Rye in my
direction......" )

I am waiting to hear from you, Terry. I have not made any plans for
that week end, so nothing will keep me from seeing you!

Thank you, Michael, for standing up for me. You are my knight in
shining armor!
