Default Mothers Day dinner

I know, I know. But I need to share.

The day dawned windy and dreary and calling for rain, and I thought, "Oh,
no", since a cookout was planned and we were going to eat on the deck.
However, it turned sunny so the plans were on.

Our daughter was here (it was her Mother's Day, too) along with her DH and
two children.

Our #1 son had announced that I was to do absolutely nothing. They were
taking care of everything. That's very difficult for me to do ;-(.
His SO, who is from Lima, Peru, spent Saturday preparing a Peruvian
appetizer called a "causa". As far as I could determine, it was cold mashed
potato, layered with jalapenos and whatever else, then molded - it was
delicious; I must get the recipe. She brought along her nephew (also from
Lima) who is going to college here. He was a great help to everyone.

We had the prerequisite hamburgers and hotdogs, prepared by my son. He was
happily grilling, since he lives in an apartment and doesn't have a chance
to do that. My daughter supplied the salad, lots of sliced tomatoes, and a
coconut cake.

Lili surprised me with another Peruvian dish. She knew that I loved tongue
and so had prepared that dish just for me. Believe me, I tucked in - and
spurned the hamburgers and hotdogs. Happiness was.

It was a great day - French wine, plus Armagnac liqueur after dinner, with
coffee. Here it is Tuesday and I'm still stuffed.

Just a warm and wonderful day.

Thank you, Dora, for sharing your special day with us. What a
wonderful day it must have been for all and now for me as well, as you
let me read all about it. May you have many, many more of these happy
occasions with your loved ones.

You got me curious, so I went and Googled. Here is some info on causa
http://perufood.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes-causa.html
There seem to be many versions, so you'll need that particualr recipe if you
want to replicate it

Thank you for the link and the good wishes. You're correct - I didn't find
any recipe resembling the causa which Lili fixed. I should have asked her
more about the different flavors. She had a special round pan, with (I
think) a removable base. The dish was turned out looking very compact and
smooth.

She spread mayonnaise on the outside and garnished the top with quartered
hard-boiled eggs and Peruvian purple olives, then placed it on lettuce
leaves on the platter. It was really attractive and different. She has
made the dish before, but without the mayonnaise and garnishes; when she
did, she had special flat molds to press little decorations into the top of
the dish. It makes a great starter.

Margaret, thank you for your lovely note. It was a very special day indeed,
where my children gave me the best gift of all - themselves.

Sounds similar to a "springvorm", a cake tin commonly used ehre. Don't know
the english name for it, but they come in various sizes and look like this:

Almost the same word, "springform", in English.
