>I really wish these Yanks would stop thinking that their >language/culture is the be all to end all. Not this Yank. "23-Skidoo" represents the high water mark of American English. That was somewhere around the Coolidge administration, and the language has been in a slow, painful decline ever since. I'm an American and I don't know what the hell we're talking about sometimes. "Whazzzzzup!!!" was our last "contribution" to the pot and that was really more of a gutteral sound based on a short phrase than actual english. Whazzzzzup! was intended to sell mediocre beer rather than to communicate anything meaningful or to describe something for which there was not an accurate word already in use. We have a president who simply cannot speak at all without a telepromptor. We're not all proud of the current state of the language here, believe it or not. Half the people here in America can't even spell. And other half are Mexicans, most of whom give every visual indication of also being borderline illiterate, but in a different language. ![]() Peter A > blathers: : We're the most dominant nation in the history of the planet. > Can anyone really be so ignorant of history? Oh? What ignorance? What history are you alluding to? So what country was *ever* more dominant than America is now, then? Name one. One! Our industrial might and military prowess won the biggest war in ur technical and organizational skills developed the most awesome weapon known to mankind. We can take that weapon and bomb the living crap out of any nation on earth with airplanes taking off from and landing at bases on our own soil, and project our might halfway around the world with airlift, sealift or amphibious assaults when it suits us. And if you really **** us off, we can incinerate your entire country a hundred times over with the push of a button. Why, we'll wipe our collective national backside with the tattered remnants of your coun- try's national soul. (Are you reading this, Mr. Ahmadinejad?) But as true as all of that is, I'm not just talking about military might. How about the economic kind? Ever heard of, say, Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Nike, Boeing, Jeep, blue jeans, or Windows? : And we have shitloads of nuclear weapons. When we want your : opinion, we'll read it from your entrails. Got it, pantnoodle? > If you are trying to convince the rest of the world that Americans > are a bunch of ignorant, stupid jackasses you are doing a great job. Given that everything I've said in this thread is in fact true, I'm not quite sure I understand where ignorance or stupidity enters into it. On _my_ side of the debate, anyway. You may recoil at forthright declarations of all that I've said, but that hardly makes it untrue -- or me stupid or ignorant. > I hope they are smart enough to realize that not all of us have a > 6th grade education and room-temperature IQ. I can'ty help noticing that I'm obviously plenty smart enough to get you to respond, and plenty educated enough to demolish your insipid remarks when you do. Life is good here in the Hyperpower. God's in His Heaven, George W. Bush is in his White House, and all's right with the world. I wonder what the poor people are up to today... Say, maybe there's something good on cable. With our next election and next presidential election if we Americans stand up and vote out the big wigs on both sides, we can easily overcome being disliked. If there is one thing Europe in particular is good at...forgiving. Just because we are a superpower does not mean we can not do better. And all Americans on both sides should be working for this. And for the most part we can. If we stop taking sides and find a workable middle ground. Stop name calling and actually resolve issues. Lava |

Pax Americanus can't last forever. Sure, under current condition, the US military, and the US economy/culture can subvert or destroy anything in the world. Blowing something away is easy. Holding another country without destroying it is much harder. The finest structures in the world succumb to the lowly termite. Stone is eventually ground away by the wind. If and when the US falls, or merely goes lower on empire food chain like UK did, the odds are it won't be due to an overt outside enemy on an actual attack. It will fall like most previous empires, from within, from lack of money or interest, or from the social contract breaking down due to a marginalized middle class, a small uber-rich class of haves, and a honking big crowd of have-nots. (standard disclaimer- I hope it lasts till I am worm food, and I'm trying very hard to not contribute to entropy.) aem sends.... |

Bush has set us back to the dark days of Reagan-- and then some. And there's no more "voting out" nor "voting in" people. They are all one party- The Greed Party. We live in a country with NO opposition party. It is a joke. The "democrat v republican" debate is a charade- to make us think they care about us. And thank the U.S. corporate media (part of the problem) for not reporting any of this-- nor exposing it. An oligarchy. That's what the U.S. is now. Most Americans are too naive to grasp this reality. |
