Just curious, has anyone ever heard of or listened to this couple, or the
restaurant?

In the KFI Kitchen
with Mary Sue & Susan
Inspired by a love for bold flavors and strong statements, Mary Sue Milliken
and Susan Feniger have made their mark with home cooking from all over the
world. For over two decades, the chefs have transformed street foods and
comfort foods into critically-acclaimed cuisine, and themselves from a
couple of Midwestern gringas into two of the country's foremost authorities
on the Latin kitchen. Trailblazers from the start, the classically trained
culinary grads (Susan from The Culinary Institute of America and Mary Sue
from Washburne Culinary Institute) met in1978 at Le Perroquet, one of
Chicago's best French restaurants. They were the first women to break into
the all-male kitchen. Serious about food and ready for new territory, they
struck out for France, Susan for the Riviera and Mary Sue for Paris, knowing
even then they would work together again some day.

etc etc etc

I've been to one of their restaurants (Border Grill at the Mandalay Bay
in Las Vegas - there's also a branch in Santa Monica). It's not Mexican
as my Mexican friends would recognise it, but it's really remarkably
good, and I'd go so far as to say that the food at the Border Grill has
been among the best Americanised Mexican food I've tasted. (I might
live in England, but I have a very bad 'going to America and eating'
habit.)

They've also published one of those yellow For Dummies books.
I bought it on holiday in Boston a couple of years ago, but it's been
hard to cook from in the UK, where a lot of fairly basic Mexican
ingredients (achiote, tomatillos etc) are really hard to get hold of.

Coincidentally, we're going to Vegas at the start of July, and staying
at the Mandalay Bay, so a few trips to the Border Grill are on the
schedule. If you're interested, I'll let you know how it goes.

Back in the old days, when FoodTV actually had some interesting content,
their show was one of my faves. Nothing particularly fancy, but good and
mostly interesting stuff well presented and with some charm. The current
crop of preening megalomaniacs are an incredibly poor replacement.

That said, they became less interesting in trying to globe-trot and
deal with cuisines outside their usual Latino stuff.

Thank you dweezle -- oops, I got it wrong -- isn't that a rock star's child?
Hmmm.
Just kidding.
Thanks for the info. I've seen that dummies book around; now I think I'll
take a look at it.
Have fun at Las Vegas.
Yes, I'm interested in your trip and the food you will be eating. I know
others probably will be, too.

I ate at their original Border Grill when it was really trendy and
later when other places got more press. Excellent, imaginative food
prepared and served with some care and attention. We'd have eaten
there more often if the place hadn't been so horrendously noisy. By
design. I think they are really good cooks who are always up for
trying something new and skillful enough to keep trying till they get
it right. But I've never seen their tv show or books. -aem

"Two Hot Tamales." I agree--good show.

They used to have a show on the Food Network a few years ago. They tend
to emphasize very hotly spiced dishes, so I have never tried their
restaurants when I have had the opportunity.

I really miss their show, "Too Hot Tamales". They made very flavorful
and creative dishes, and it was a fun show. I think they took their
show off because the blonde one(I can never keep their names straight)
was having another baby.
Their recipes were usually highly spiced, but not always hot or fiery.
They also have a "Too Hot Tamales" cook book that is good.

They're not a "couple" as in ******* couple. Not that it..... And yes
I used to follow their great old FN show "Two Hot Tamales." It went
off the air. I'd like to see them come back.

A friend gave me a copy of their book Too Hot Tamales (sp?). I like it
a lot. I liked it enough that when I saw Mesa Mexicana at a used book
store I bought it without thinking twice.

Correct. Only one of them is a ******* (like it matters anyway). It's
not too difficult to guess which one.

And the one that isn't a ******* is married to the ex-husband of the one
that is.

Not that there's...

Woah, is that true!? That's a riot. I can only wonder how
that came about.

Wondering, too.

Actually Mary Sue had the short haircut and boyish looks in the early
shows. I'd have guessed her....going on "stereotypes" (which I
abhore..) and Susan had the more fem looks with lots of jewelry and
long flowing curly black hair. Interesting about Mary Sue being
married to Susan's ex!!
