Default My crazy Penzeys haul!

I drank too much coffee on an empty belly and headed off to Penzeys to shop.
It probably would have been a good idea to do more than have a cursory glance
at the map the day before. I had a general idea of where it was but didn't
bother to write down actual directions or street name. I eventually found it
because I got the magic in me.

16 oz yellow mustard seeds
16 oz powdered yellow mustard
16 oz brwn mustard seeds
(I'm making mustard this summer)
sesame seeds
black cardamom pods
16 oz crystallized ginger (for cherry ginger jam)
Italian sausage mix
galena street rub
sunny spain
country french vinaigrette
bicentennial rub
black pepper
Italian dressing
whole rosemary
garam masala
balti seasoning (so so so good on sweet potatoes)
chili con carne seasoning
horseradish powder
guajillo peppers
smoked paprika
maharajah curry
vegetable soup base

and the 4 jar bbq set for my dad for father's day

nope!
My dad had gotten me two gift sets, one that he had given me last year and one
made up of things I already had so I exchanged those (with his blessing) and a
friend of mine gave me a $30 gc for christmas. So my part was pretty minimal!
It was nice to be able to shop without considering the prices.

you know, I just don't really use it that much. I buy as little as possible
just when I need it. Last time I used saffron was about 3 years ago or so.

shopping list snipped...

A Penzey's finally opened in SoCal in Torrance, CA., which is about 40 miles
southwest of Monrovia (210 eb to 605 sb to 105 wb to 110 sb)...since I'm
having company this week from the east coast...this may be a good excuse to
make the trek!

Have you tried the Italian Sausage mix before? IMO, it needs more fennel,
which is easy enough to fix.

That was my thought when I smelled it and I figured I could just add that and
some red pepper flakes. I was pretty underwhelmed by all the sausage
seasonings they had but I figured I'd try it. David's going to be gone for
most of the summer so I am going to spend time making sausage and the like
(he's veg, i'm not, it's a pain to deal with meat when he's around).

I've always known that, Toots!

That (snipped) list looked like more than that store credit, eh?

Which one'd you go to?

I had store credit and a gift certificate and then paid for some. I stupidly
didn't make a list of the empty bags in the freezer (I keep all the spices in
my freezer in the basement and when I use up a bulk bag I stick it right back
in there and when it's time to go back I go get all the empties and see what I
need). I got a few dulicates, but that's okay, it's not like I won't use it.

Went to the Lakeville one, talked you up, they love you.

I like sweet Italian sausage, which doesn't have much pepper, but has a lot
more fennel. Make a small batch to taste, and see what you think, though.
Italian sausage varies a lot. Here in Colorado, I rarely see the sweet
stuff. They have what they call "mild" but it's not what I'm looking for.

OTOH, Penzey's Polish sausage mix was exactly what I was looking for. I
can't find the fresh Polish here at all, just smoked, so I was pretty happy
that the Penzey's stuff worked out.

I used the Italian Herb Mix and added fennel. Tasted just like the
good Sicilian rope sausage they sell at AJ's. Which is what I was
going for.

I've never bought the Italian mix...maybe I'll give that a try next time!
