Had a lovely interlude at a local Italian restaurant - opted for their Linguine Pescatore - to DIE for..........sumptuous prawns and scallops with a liberal dash of chilli.... still reeling! Order it just about every time we dine there... nothing if not predictable! Husband had the camembert stuffed chicken with roasted vegetables. Also very nice - though he scoffed the lot without offering a sample. Did however get a scrape of the sauce - delicious! But my taste for shellfish is only satisfied when we dine out - neither husband nor kids can handle shellfish. so I really can't justify buying it just for me and they're off-the-menu at home and my one indulgence when we eat out. Reminds me of a wedding & reception we attended back in the late 70s. Husband (Graeme) has a horrible reaction to all shellfish (can eat fish though). Reception was held in a magnificent garden setting, marquees, string quartet the whole shebang. Trouble was it was catered for by Burleigh Marr's at Breakfast Creek and featured seafood platters - each one containing a lobster, 4 Moreton Bay bugs, crabs, copious volume of king tiger prawns, oysters and green lipped mussels - and served four. Only thing which wasn't shellfish was the daintily sliced triangles of bread... and Graeme was ravenous! I was the envy of all other diners at our table - I scoffed 'our' half platter of succulent seafood without a moments remorse!!!!! It was THE best reception I've ever been to!!!! We made a pit-stop on the way home for Graeme to stave off hunger at the Windmill on Petrie Terrace (think he scoffed 3 or 4 deep fried potatoes (cooked whole and one of their 'specialities'...they were delicious come to think of it) and some other disgustingly greasy morsels. Patted it down, kept it safe...gave it the occasional compliment... then, in 2004 on the momentous occasion of husband's 50th opened it........... was WELL worth waiting for! Were going to save it for our 30th wedding anniversary (2007) but were advised against it. I did a "Big Reds" tasting at the Paddo a couple years back, when they had the current release of Grange. Everyone was waiting with bated breath for the opening of the bottles. When we all got our 'splash', they all stood around and acted like a bunch of wine ******s expousing the greatness and quality of the wine, and no-one had actually drank their portion. I sniffed and glugged, swished and swallowed. Everyone looked at me with great expectations to reveal what it tasted like. I swirled the remanents in the glass, took another sniff, said "I've tasted $10 reds that are better".... and walked off :-) *And* I have!! maybe they actually improve with age..... but then again, I don't like an old wine. I like something that's going to grab you around the throat as you drink it :-) > > Were going to save it for our 30th wedding anniversary (2007) but were > advised against it. > Took it along to a Penfold's workshop about 5 years ago and was told > it's current worth (then) was around $700-$800. Michael "Dog3" Lonergan wrote: > Michael <- can NOT gain weight with trying to I HATE you Michael - can NOT LOSE weight.... with ...ah shit... not trying to. Too too many nice foods... too too many nice wines! When I was 20 - money was the problem. No money to buy the gorgeous foods/wines on offer. Which was probably a good thing. Now I'm (almost blue-rinse-set) money (or lack of it) is not an issue - THANK GOD! So I'm cuddly.I deal with it. I'm 50 (in 9 or so months)... figure its quality AND quantity that counts! At least I'm HAPPY!!!!!!!!!! (dieting makes me a very, very, very nasty person) <smiling sweetly> What's the use of getting to this age if one can't indulge one's dearest pleasures in life - eating AND drinking! (and other things... but that's another group....................) Never been a stick insect. Never want to be. And in truth, never could be. (Have thrown out the bathroom scales my dear mother gave me for Easter one year. Thought that was a particularly unsubtle low-blow. She's a bit like that though) But life's pleasures are too, too tempting for a mere mortal like me. LadyJane -- "Never trust a skinny cook!" GO THE MAROONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Used to be available here in Oz. Was used extensively for 'cheese sauce' back in the 60s & 70s. LadyJane -- "Never trust a skinny cook!" |
