Default How Clean is Your Grocery Store?

The birds in the grocery store thread got me thinking. Overall, in your
experience, how clean does your grocery store appear to be? I'm not talking
about walking around doing a white-glove test, just your general
perceptions.

I shop at Schuck's. On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate the overall cleanliness at
9 based on just looking around. I never see spilled items (not even in the
pet food aisle, Om!)

The supermarkets around here appear to be pretty clean. They're all large,
newish-looking, and attractive.

Before they built the new store next door, the old store was
always dirty looking, if not dirty. They tried replacing the linoleum
floor, that wasn't enough. They even had this plywood enclosure
for customer service, how cheesy is that??

The new store, I have no cleanliness qualms, it's all good.

I notice that the chains mostly didn't make the list. Is K-mart
actually a grocery in NYC?

The K-Mart nearest me closed several years ago (back when K-Mart was
closing a lot of stores). But when it was open it had several aisles
that I imagine would make it a "grocery store" for inspection
purposes. Cereals, staples like dried pasta, canned foods, etc. I
don't think they had refrigerated stuff like milk though.

I go to a variety of stores: Stop & Shop, Shaws, PriceRite, and some of
the local produce and specialty stores. Some have pretty scuffed
floors, but there are rarely any visable signs of critters.

Walmart and some of the odd-lot stores which carry older items and
stuff that the main stores don't want have more difficulties in that
regard.

I'd give my neighborhood Safeway about a 6 or 7. But the building is 30+
years old at this point, and it shows.

I've seen brand new stores, particularly when a chain is trying to break
into a new territory, that I'd rate at 10. But those go downhill quite fast
to 9 or 8.

I've seen independent supermarkets that I'd rate a 3 or 4. Often these are
locations with smaller old buildings that were abandoned by the major
chains.

I guess in a way I'm more concerned with whether food is handled properly
with regard to temperature control than cleanliness, though lack of concern
on the part of management probably affects things across the board. Most
things are packaged pretty well these days (and that was done elsewhere) so
cleanliness of the store itself may not have any effect on the food sold
there.

I shop primarily at Winco in Tigard, Oregon and it gets a 9 too. They
are always mopping the floors in there. They even vacuum the onion bin
to get all the stray onion skins.

Uh, yeah. The OP didn't ask for that info, though...

I shop at Kroger, H-E-B, and (once in awhile) Randall's.

Mine is a pit. It's a dump. They don't keep the coolers cool enough. The
floor is usually dirty. It could really use a new coat of paint. Produce
aisle needs sweeping usually. The cat food section is rarely organized.
Yet I keep going back for more.

Hmm....

Mostly quite good but there is one that has a packaged chook cold cabinet
that always smells of Salmonella.

Heh, whatever reason it's got something going for it. For my pit
of a store, it was the only game in town. Now they've not only
cleaned up their act, there is competition in the area as well. But,
that was then, this is now.

Oddly enough, the timing of the new competition and the cleaning
up act are unrelated, you'd think it was. Fact is, the chain was
bought out and the new owners (Albertsons) rebuilt a number of
the older, dirty stores. Luckily mine was one of them.

Mary,

Me too... don't ya just hate that when someone says "me too" <g>. Our
closest Kroger is undergoing an upgrade and yesterday when we were driving
past noticed the sign said "Kroger Signature". I think it must one of the
smallest Kroger's in the Houston area and yet they are calling it a
signature store... go figure.

Hope your move goes smoothly and I'm sure those of us who post in
houston.eats will be pleased to send you CARE packages from our area.

I've seen smaller Krogers that are Signature stores. Always surprises me
when I see that they're Signatures.

I don't think there are any Krogers around here (The Woodlands) that aren't
Signature stores. I think there's still an H-E-B Pantry store here, though.
The H-E-B Platinum one in Market Street is really nice--very Central
Market-like. I don't shop there very often, though, as I can find better
deals at Kroger, and Kroger's prices are better in general.

Mary,

Maybe that CARE package business should be the other way around since you
are going to have a Wegman's! What about Trader Joe's?

So sad though... you'll lose your Houston roadrunner address! I'm quite
fond of mine <g>

Hummm...well, some checkers don't clean their conveyor belts often
enough for me. But many times when I go to check out, they have just
cleaned them, so I really can't complain. I could probably give them
a 10. The produce section is lovely - no highly marred, mushy or moldy
fruit like you see at Fred Meyer, Albertsen's or Safeway. Plus they
clean the meat bins well with bleach, often, and supply Purell and
paper towels for your hands.

Default How Clean is Your Grocery Store?

In article >,

Absolutely fascinating thread. I know this is an old thread but I had to
comment. I have always been a stickler for cleanliness while shopping. I
think since I slipped on an old broken jar of mayo as a kid in Farmer
Jacks and got rushed to the emergency room. 15 stitches later I vowed to
look around and case the joint before entering and spending my money.
So, after moving to the West Coast my opinion is California has much
cleaner stores, maybe since they are newer and they don't have to deal
with extreme weather for months at a time like in the Midwest. Anyway,
Safeway and Mollie Stone's in the Bay Area tend to be quite clean, and
their employees are actually happy. I can't say that for the local
liquor stores (or party stores for you people in the Midwest). I have
one store in my neighborhood, that smells like dry baking urine. Nothing
like the smell of homeless urine to make you want to buy food. However,
I have another small mostly organic store in the hood that has a
constant picker upper and they even run the Roomba and Scooba cleaning
robots on their floors about twice a day. Talk about sticklers for
cleanliless. Why hire someone when you can multitask using robots.
Although, I don't know whether you can consider the Roomba and Scooba
organic, they are a welcome site since every step I take is a clean one.
If there isnt anything crunching on the feet, everything else seems
clean to me. Sorry for my long diatribe. Like I said, I had a pretty bad
early experience and I don't believe I have really worked it out in
therapy!
