Related distantly to kangaroos. Nasty creatures, combination scavenger and small predator. I've killed them for killing my poultry in the past... http://www.bear-tracker.com/opossum.html http://kaweahoaks.com/html/opossum.htm They are VERY common around here! -- Peace! They are good for eating snails and other pests, or decaying fruit that has dropped off the tree. There is rarely any problem interacting with cats and dogs, although the dog might attack the possum. And unlike much wildlife, the body temperature is so low that rabies is virtually unknown. I always put out my cats' rejected food and enjoy watching the neighborhood possums who come around at night. Art (former member of the Opossum Society of the US) |

I think they are cute, but I don't want to eat one. Jill |

Bullshit. Corner one in your henhouse after he's wantonly slaughtered half a dozen of your prize chickens, and you'll be rewarded a display of sharp teeth and rage. Club the little ****er; why waste a 40c shotgun shell? ;-) Agreed..... My dogs always helped me to corner them, then you can kill them. Om -> normally a pacifist and wildlife lover, but intolerant of overpopulated poultry predators.... Raccoons are even worse. -- Peace! I have seen them in Mexican standoffs though. |
