I've rehabbed adult possums...

A wormier critter I've never known. <shudder>

Multiple wormings and the were _still_ coming out, among other
intestinal parasites.

I'd not eat a possum on a bet!

ACK! I think my husband's eaten them in the past. Should I de-worm him?

Ginny,

"I know of several ways to catch a possum. Perhaps the easiest is to
simply drive around for a while in your truck. The problem will soon
resolve itself. (SCCRRRREEEEEEECCHHH!!. . . SPLAT. . .)"

Too funny! Me and the ex were driving down the road near home and came
upon possum roadkill (blood and guts). She actually asked "is it dead?"
and I replied, "no, it's just playing dead," She thought it over for a
couple seconds then punched me in the arm. Go figure! ;)

It's amazing how some people can be brilliant, and yet so gullible at the
same time. I once told my ex that she absolutely could NOT run any water
while I was installing a motion sensor light over the back door. Same scene
as yours - 2 second delayed reaction.

LOL, my gramma always drew the line at possum. My mom said her older
brothers would hunt and gramma would cook whatever they brought home but she
drew the line at possum.

Yah never know... ;-)

When all those worms started coming out of that critter, I took one of
his poops to work to check under the microscope...

He had more than just worms. <shudder> Amoebas and other protozoan
parasites. It was....

gross.

And considering what I do for a living, it takes a _lot_ to gross me out.

Unlike ours, which contain a mixture of rose petals and emeralds. Rumors
sometimes circulate that E. coli are in there, too, but that's just plain
silly.

Another woman I know spent several hours on the web, researching the idea
that it was impossible for a duck's quack to echo. The research ended when
my son, who just finished AP physics, laughed (mostly at her) and explained
why the idea was so goofy.

That was a MYTHBUSTER (Discovery Channel cable TV show) myth and there
was an imperceptable echo, IIRC.

Should've married HER! ;)

The actual name is oppossum.

It's the only marsupial in the Americas, looks sort of like a giant rat
but is pretty slow moving.

Opossum...

The only American Marsupial. Related distantly to kangaroos.
Nasty creatures, combination scavenger and small predator.
I've killed them for killing my poultry in the past...

They are VERY common around here!

They are generally harmless and docile creatures, nonaggressive, and good to
have around. They are good for eating snails and other pests, or decaying
fruit that has dropped off the tree. There is rarely any problem interacting
with cats and dogs, although the dog might attack the possum.

And unlike much wildlife, the body temperature is so low that rabies is
virtually unknown.

I always put out my cats' rejected food and enjoy watching the neighborhood
possums who come around at night.

When they are very young but have just stopped hanging on momma's back, they
look a little less like a rat and more like a funny faced owl on four legs.
I think they are cute, but I don't want to eat one.

Bullshit. Corner one in your henhouse after he's wantonly slaughtered half a
dozen of your prize chickens, and you'll be rewarded a display of sharp
teeth and rage. Club the little ****er; why waste a 40c shotgun shell?

Being a relatively newcomer in Oz, I found the above website info very
informative. I didn't realise that America had a cousin of the Australian
possum. We have lots of possums in our garden. They are very cute but wild
and their bites are dangerous. I haven't seen possum on a menu yet.

My cats have caught possums in the past, but now don't bother anymore - more
trouble than its worth I suppose.
I have seen them in Mexican standoffs though.

They also ate the guts out of nesting ducks, ate eggs, and any young
birds they could find. Chickens are pretty helpless at night and possums
are nocturnal.

They are _not_ harmless to poultry.

Agreed.....

My dogs always helped me to corner them, then you can kill them.

Om -> normally a pacifist and wildlife lover, but intolerant of
overpopulated poultry predators....
