And now they are packaged (for the same price) in 7 lb. bags.

Seems to be a trend.

I was thinking perhaps she meant they used to come in 10 lb bags?
The shrinking product thread?

But... but... potatoes are a commodity, unlike canned and boxed processed
crap.

I buy potates singularly, not in bags. That way I get to choose the ones I
want.

No morphing, just me thinking to myself and expecting everyone to
understand.

I used to buy potatoes in a 10lb bag. Now the bag is 7lb.for the same
price.

Sort of like Cambell's soup - smaller, but the same price. Sucks!!

Yes Jill, but what if... what if you have a sudden urge for potato (baked,
fried or whatever). You have none and I have my 7 lbs!

Campbell's soup? the stuff that *used* to sell for 10 for
$1.00? maybe 25 cents/can when not on sale?
i can't believe they want $1.39 per can now... so what do you
think the Boo wants in his school lunch? yup, expensive soup.

Expensive soup?! Frankly, it costs more to make a gallon of homemade
chicken noodle soup than it does to buy a can of it. But we're talking
price, not quality. I do, however, still buy canned chicken noodle soup
(the store brand) as a convenience for when I don't feel good. If I don't
feel good I'm sure as hell not going to make chicken soup for myself

I remember when chicken/beef stock was 59 cents a can, it was cheaper than
the other canned soups - now it's over a dollar. And I'm not THAT old!

There's a gas station in town that has some of the best prices on a
few items.
Bananas, onions, and potatoes are $0.29 per pound.
1% milk is $1.19 per half gallon.
Bread is $0.50 per one-pound loaf. USD

Our potatoes are always hand-selected now.

They still do where I live. Well, 10 and 5 pound bags.

I do that when I get them at the produce stand, but it's too expensive
and the grocery store. They charge 99c a pound or so for loose ones.

In general I buy a 5 lb bag 'just to have' ... and sometimes
I'll pick up a couple of those enormous baking potatoes, loose.
Depends what I feel like having.

Those enormous bakers are wonderful. I pick those up when I want to do the
double-stuffed thing. I can get 3 meals out of one double-stuffed, large
bakers. I think I have a craving, now, thanks. :~)

Lots of food producers have been doing the same thing. Their costs go
up, but they don't want to turn off consumers by putting higher prices
on their products, so they reduce package size. This tactic has been
practiced for several years; its nothing new. I suspect we consumers
will see more of it due to the high cost of fuel to produce and
distribute the food we eat.

Not here it's not. There are *always* a couple of rotting ones in it.

The bags of potatoes are a mixed, well, bag. There's usually a few
decent sized for baking and a number of smaller ones. The the former
get baked or roasted on the Weber, the latter I use for mashed or stews.

I try to kind of look through the plastic of the bag to spot any
obvious rotten ones. I usually don't have too much problem with that,
maybe a couple that need portions cut off.

Late August every year I harvest about 20 bags of organic Gold Rush
potatoes. This is a Russet type that makes a superb baked potato. The first
big ones are rushed to the kitchen fresh out of the dirt. They have white
flesh with an earthy flavour. I brush them with olive oil, wrap them in a
thick slice of fatty bacon and bake in tin foil with butter and sea salt.
Served warm with minced fresh shallots, chives, sour cream and butter...
CREAM YOUR JEANS!!!!!
