I made a big family birthday dinner with lots of pretty things.
Here it is:
http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/e/x/exk7/Big8oh/BigEightOh!.html

Excuse the singing. It's really awful.

how precious, you can see the cows behind your house that gave you the
cream
for the berry desert

it looks like you meant to make a ring with the desert...

looks like you needed a moisture barrier under top layer, like.. wax
paper, then remove just before serving.. or just keep top layer off
till last minute, but still looks very nice very pretty

this is a Jewish holiday? 3 days of feasting?
I like that, sounds very nice.

I would have liked everything cept the tomatoes.. but I like risotto,
did you put saffron in the risotto? it looks like you did

everything was very thoughtful, even a bird nest for the eggs

I'm sure the salad was a meal in itself

It's a Paris Brest and it plopped all three times I made it,
but that just made more room for all the berries and cream.

It was three days because it was family visiting. The
middle day was the big birthday.

I forgot about the saffron. Ooooops.

The nests took some trial and error. I used dark root
veggies like maroon carrots and blue potatoes, then
julienned them with a processor and squished the stuff into
silicone cup cake pans and squished aluminum foil down plus
some beans to keep the shape. They looked amazingly like
real, slightly ragged nests.

> I'm sure the salad was a meal in itself

I tried to appeal to kids with stuff they can't imagine is
even edible. For last year's birthday
(http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/e/x/exk7/June13/Birthday.html)<-
scroll down, I made little veggie plates with very tiny
portions and even the 8 year old twins were intrigued.

The challenge is having the children greet the food with
smiles. Even if they've been told beforehand that face
making wouldn't be accepted. I made an exception for the 16
year old boy, but privately: I took him into the kitchen and
pointed out stuff I knew he liked, then asked what did he
think. Ooooh, that's disgusting! he proudly announced at
the pasta he loves. And the ice cream, his favorite
chocolate, Ooooo, that's disgusting! We do have an
understanding and I thought that was pretty funny,
especially because his parents didn't think so.

I'm Jewish (Orthodox, in fact) and I have never heard of such a thing.
Besides, she said it was a birthday party, she didn't say it was a
Jewish holiday.

let's see, you got pascha, nativity of the holy virgin, elevation of
the cross, presentation of the holy virgin into the temple, the
nativity of christ, theophany - baptism of our Lord, presentation of
Jesus in the temple, annunciation, entrance of the Lord into jerusalem,
ascension, pentecost, transfiguration of our Lord, and dormition of the
holy virgin

if you had read the captions, you would have read an isolated statement
that proclaims a 3 day feast; a perfectly reasonable observation on my
part

but seeing that I am a dumb gentile heathen dog of a gentile, I think
it's ok to ask if it was related to any one of those feasts, don't you?
not like i've ever studied them, cut me some slack

What Mordechai, you've never had Passover seders just before or after
Shabbat? It's quite a trick to have all three with warm food and none
of it overcooked!

You are aware, I hope, that none of those are JEWISH holidays?
Which is what you asked. You didn't ask about Christian holidays. So,
*WE* don't have those holidays, Christians have them.

> if you had read the captions, you would have read an isolated

Speaking of people being blind, the caption on that page at the
first picture actually says " Any holiday that is observed with a feast
is my idea of a good holiday.
An 80th birthday certainly fits into that category. Our three days of
feasting began with Day 1: a triple melon soup,..."

That being the case, it is clearly stated that it is a birthday,
and not a Jewish holiday. Yet you asked if the three-day feast was
because of a Jewish holiday. To which I responded that she said it was
for a birthday, not a Jewish holiday. Based on that, I believe my
response to your question was given in good faith and with clear sight.
You had no call to get insulting.

What you wrote below is also unfair. I also don't understand it,
since you asked if it was a JEWISH holiday, and none of those holidays
you cited above are Jewish.

> but seeing that I am a dumb gentile heathen dog of a gentile, I think
> it's ok to ask if it was related to any one of those feasts, don't

Okay, we'll cut some you some slack, if you'll stop being so
upTIGHT. I haven't insulted you, and you had no reason to insult me. You
don't need to lash out at people who aren't your enemy.

I'm sorry if you felt my wording was in some way too harsh. That
was not my intention. If, incidentally, you feel that being harsh is
wrong, then you might consider adopting that philosophy in your posts as
well. Otherwise that's being hypocritical. I apologize is my words here
hurt you. Again, that is not my intention.

who is we? (this was the point about being blind)

your words seemed trained on the idea that I wrote the word Jew
that's how it made me feel... it's hard to offend me

you weren't harsh

I still think it was reasonable of me to ask
I had some clues

the OP here seemed quite passionate with the whole thing, I mean the
cooking
and the presentation

who in the Wold goes to that much trouble over a birthday
I knew it was a birthday.. but a feast is for kings, AND for a chosen
people
I knew I could be wrong...

I had hoped it was a Jewish feast, cause then, I would have pilfered
the website even more as I think it's very interesting.

oh! the other clue, and you won't get out of this headlock...

nobody has a 3-day birthday feast

NOW SUCKA!

The poussin is a teeny chicken, smaller than a Cornish hen.
I scooped out the tomatoes and saved the insides for the
next night's pasta (made with 40 ounces flour and 10 eggs -
whew), then filled them with a mixture of wild rice, tiny
cut orange peppers, much garlic, a little chopped leeks,
fresh whatever herbs growing in barrel on deck, no pepper
because of kids, grated I-forget-which-Italian-cheese, no
salt because the cheese was salty. There was extra filling,
so it went around as well as in the tomatoes, all put in a
handsome copper round pot about 14 inches diameter, 3 inches
high. I don't know how long it baked, probably 400 degrees.

I love the first set of pictures except the bird's nest. Scary. Apart
from that, it all looked delicious and you should pat yourself on the
back. I hope your guests enjoyed it as much as I did cyberatically.

If you can't find cyberatically in the dictionary, buy another
dictionary. I have autocratically decided it's a perfectly valild word.

I use cyber with any prefix or suffix I can find. The word
is precious.

By the way, I've been to N.Z., swam at Wellington, walked
the Mitford trail, went whale-watching in rough waters that
gave me the impression of dropping several floors in an
elevator, and went sea kayaking. Altogether, delightful
couple weeks.

Kathy,

Would you please answer a question for me? Do you have graham crackers in
New Zealand. I know it is an odd question, but my son said you don't, and I
really don't know!

Thanks,

Googling on "graham" "crackers" and "New Zealand" brings up a number of
listings. I find the first two rather odd:

Graham Cracker Perfume by Demeter - 4 oz EDC SPRAY - Discount Sale
Graham Cracker by Demeter - EDC SPRAY 4 oz for Women ... Graham Cracker
- Perfume for Women - 4 oz EDC SPRAY Zoom In Zoom In ...

Others of the first few look like they're blithe explanations that any
NZ recipe which uses digestive biscuits can be duplicated with graham
crackers.

That explains it!! They have no graham crackers because they are using
them to make perfume!! It's another world.

Thanks for the reply. I asked because Rob, my son, was explaining to a NZ
online friend of his about S"Mores, and the friend didn't know anything
about them. Then when Rob mentioned graham crackers, he didn't know anything
about them....so....Rob plans on mailing this guy some graham crackers, so
he can make some S"Mores!

Which brings up a question I have. . .I once heard that Australians do
not put salt on their popcorn - they use sugar instead?

Any Aussies out there, that can answer that question?
