do you regularly worm the turtle? i'd be leery of passing
parasites... although i do give Mortis earthworms straight
from the garden, and just discovered Gamera *loves* crayfish!

i agree, but i think apple snails can't be as awful as raw
conch. i just don't care for crunchy, rubbery food. the hot
sauce was good though.

yesterday at the pond across the street where we go to swim,
the vegan folks from Sustie's (vegan restaurant) were carrying
on about animal 'slavery'. i decided i needed to go home &
whip my livestock into producing more ;) then i terrorized the
carrots by thinning a few for a salad...

Best snails in the world for keeping the aquarium walls free of algae,
and since they are not hermaphroditic like most snails, their
reproduction rate was not as high. You have to actually have a pair.

I never thought about it. Actually, I bought the snails to control
algae but he didn't let them...What species do you have? Primo is a
red eared slider, about a foot long.

my current turtle is Gamera. he's (ok, i'm still guessing
gender) a snapping turtle & will be 2 in August. he's about
4.5" now. i do restrict his diet somewhat as it's unhealthy to
let them grow too quickly. he had a very short hibernation
last winter, only 6 weeks, so he's a bit bigger than an
average 2 year old.
i also have Mortis, a male Bell's hingeback tortoise and
Horus & Shelia, a pair of Spider tortoises (that i got just
before they became CITES listed). hopefully they'll be getting
to breeding size in the next year or so.
what size tank do you have for your slider? Gamera is
outgrowing his 10 gallon & i'm thinking of building something
custom since he doesn't need deep water. snappers don't swim
well.
and does your son tell everyone to wash thier hands after
touching the turtle? Boo was saying that as soon as he could
talk.

Cool! The only downside to turtles is that they live so damn long. We
think this guy is at least 20 years old just based on his "look".
Someone threw him into our swimming pool when we lived in San Jose. We
know he is a male and once the pond is in, plan to adopt a female for
him.

He's currently in a 48-long but it's too small. We have plans for a
pond but it hasn't been put in yet this summer. He may have to wait
until next year, much to my chagrin. I found someone to do it for us
but DH is insisting he wants to do it himself.

He's not allowed to touch the turtle yet. A couple more years and we
will start the routine. He does touch the snakes and we do the Purell
immediately, followed by washing. I am a freak about it.

you wouldn't :) peanuts are a legume, which means they have
too much protien for turtles/tortoises. as a rare treat for a
tortoise, maybe, but for the most part you'd want to avoid the
whole family (as regular diets, these things can cause liver &
kidney damage in tortoises, along with malformed shells from
too rapid growth)

Meat is higher in protein than legumes...
The most important part of shell growth is mineral balance.
I fed a lot of cheap dog food when I had box tortoises. It had a lot of
bone fragments in it, and that's a GOOD thing.

kept clean... Try walking down the street in a ghetto some time.

Heck, I even police the front yard for dog crap at least every other
day, and often daily.

Just takes a few minutes with a poop rake and long handled dustpan...

I had a bunch of college roomates who were biology majors and they kept
snakes, salamanders, etc. Lemme tell ya, the smells that emanated from
those critters' abodes was NAUSEATING, 30 years later I can recall that
smell exactly.

A few years back I had a neighbor, another biologist, natch. He kept
several snakes, the odd salamander, etc. He had a FILTHY 50 - gallon
aquariam. Not only did his place smell, but his filthy habits attracted
roaches. He also had three cats who ate wet food and that was an
additional "problem". He finally moved after I called the management
company and threatened to "take action" regard his House of Filth
housekeeping habits...

I said to him, "Just so you know, most people do NOT consider vermin
'pets' or 'just another one of God's creatures'...".

Maybe I was just unlucky and hit the filth "jackpot", but biologists
I've run into have a very poor conception of "cleanliness" -- and this
extends to their personal hygiene too.

Keeping animals in such dire conditions is IMNSHO a form of animal
abuse, in their natural states these creatures keep themselves clean
(at least by their standards)...all of these biologist types couldn't
understand that I guess.

Good for you, Om. Wish more had yer attitude -- my congested Chicawgo
nabe is now chock - full of canines -- and also their cretin owners who
care not a wit about cleaning up after their pets. It REALLY detracts
from the quality of urban living...

IMNSHO no one should have a dog unless they have a yard of some kind to
keep it in...apartment dogs should be banned entirely (unless they are
guide animals).

The main ingredient in cheap dog food is corn. The best diet for any
reptile is a natural one - in the case of a box turtle that would be
snails, slugs, worms, other insects and plant materials.

Of course. It doesn't surprise me one bit that Mr. Morrow hung out
with people who have no sense of hygiene -personal or otherwise.

Snakes shit stinks, but you remove it immediately and the problem is
gone. Same for cat shit. Or human shit, for that matter. It's not
neuroscience.

As for the turtle, he doesn't stink at all, because he has a very
efficient and well-established filter system. In fact, I have more
problem keeping the feeder tank balanced.

Simple. Not only did they not keep them clean, they probably used the
wrong substrate.

I just don't like stepping in it, and I don't like the smell.
Plus, it's not healthy for the dogs.

And fer cryin' out loud, it does not even take me 5 frickin' minutes if
I do it daily! There is no excuse.

Cat litter boxes also get scooped daily. Takes about 10 minutes.

Well, I had some box tortoises that were 18 years old when I finally
gave them away. :-) The dog food also has meat in it, but their diet,
while primarily canned dog food, also consisted of strawberries,
lettuce, apples and a variety of other greens and fruits, plus whatever
bugs wandered their way. They were in an outdoor sand pen.

I gave a newborn away (I had one female that laid eggs occasionally) to
a friend. She fed it vionate dusted crickets and whatever greens were in
the terrarium.

It ended up with a deformed shell...

She gave it back to me at 2 years of age and I did what I could for it,
but it only lived 5 years. <sigh> Ornates are supposed to live 20 to 25
years.

Don't underestimate skippy premium for land turtles.

The bone is necessary and I know that any dogs I fed it to, their poop
was loaded with bone fragments. There is more meat in there than you
might think despite the labelling.

Indeed... I tended to use kitty litter as a reptile substrate. It kept
them clean and dry and made cleanup easy. I never kept water turtles,
just land turtles. Ornate box.

I really hate the new 'developement nabs' who have the lovely landscaped
yards and the designer dogs who they bring out 'walkies' to do the do in our
yards so as not to 'disturb the grass' in theirs. At least this was the
excuse the animal gave my hub when he caught his dog doin the do in our
yard. Begrudgingly picked it up. Hub is up early and saw the same guy
bring the dog to our yard 'earlier' hoping we wouldn't see it. FBS drove
through the development and located the landscaped 'estate'. A few
'delivery refused's ' found on the doorstep and one, gotta love the kid,
right at the driver's door of the luxury car and lo and behold, the early
morning poopy runs ceased.

The mice I get are surplus research mice (never used) that are slated
to be killed anyway. They are humanely euthanized (cervical pop),
lined up on meat trays, vacuum packed immediately after death, flash
frozen in liquid nitrogen and shipped overnight on dry ice. Makes
quite a nice surprise for anyone who goes poking around our freezer...

Don't worry about it... I was not trying to be malicious.

I've kept snakes. I thought the point he was making is that pet snakes
are anything but vegetarian. I used to raise my own rats to feed them
and I injected them with liquid reptile vitamins when the rats were
half-swallowed.

Rats suffer when being killed by snakes. It's not a pleasant death and
was one major reason I started feeding pre-killed fresh frozen. Plus it
protected the snakes from being bitten. My male boa once got a badly
infected bite on his face and cost me a vet bill.
