Are there any decent ones around Irvine, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach,
where one can get beef tongue, chopped liver, other good stuff?

There is a Jerry's Deli in Costa Mesa. That's probably about as close
as you'll get to a decent jewish deli. Here's their address:

Jerry's Deli
3210 Park Center Drive
Costa Mesa, Ca 92626
Tel: 714-662-3354
Fax: 714-662-3363

Here's the website: http://www.jerrysfamousdeli.com/
Their menu is on the website, that should give you a good idea if it's
what you're looking for.

There's also a place in Laguna Hills that is strictly Kosher (as in
closed Saturdays, etc), called the Kosher Bite. They're at 23595
Moulton Pkwy., Ste. H, Laguna Hills, (949) 770-1818

Beyond that, well, there really isn't anything else in Orange County
that qualifies even remotely as a "decent" Jewish deli. You have to
head up into LA for that. And even then, the pickings are pretty slim.

Well, speaking as a xenophobic chauvinist pig, I deplore people who eat
pork - I feel so much safer amongst Muslims and Jews (but not that 'Jerry'
character, obviously! - he needs a sharp word from his Rabbi, if you ask me)

The bigot to whom you reply, who pretends to be a Xian, and
thus not actually interested in kashrus, is not interested in
facts like that. Especially if it gets in the way of his hysterical
hate-mongering.

they're open 24/7.

Ahhhhhhhh! that abbreviation of the Name, again!

It's sad to see you abandoning your religious heritage, just to try and
please the descendants of bloodthirsty savages who murdered their Messiah.

They hate him so much that they cannot bear even to write His holy name - so
consumed are they by blind rage.

Don't try to be like them, Sue - you know in your heart that they despise
you for being a 'convert' , so don't pander to the bigoted hate-filled
liars, rather stand up and tell them that they will be destroyed, and that
the pitiful remnant that remain alive will be only too glad to acknowledge
their Messiah, from the very depths of their irradiated hearts!

Forgive my butting in. Another element that I noticed is that the
original poster asked for a Jewish deli. While, I, as an Orthodox Jew,
will consider only KOSHER food to be Jewish, I am aware that sadly, many
Jewish people don't share that view. So I wasn't quite sure what was
being requested, nor, for that matter, what sort of answers were being
given. I'm not a member of SCJ, but I am a member of RFC, and as such I
would say that there is no reason I can think of that too many RFCers
would be likely to even think of that aspect. If asked about a Jewish
deli, it is logical that many on RFC would not consider the kashrus
factor, and there is no reason to expect them to think in terms of
kosher and non-kosher.

How does that work? Is that federal court perchance? With
municipal or superior court, if you live out of state (or even
out of the county) you don't have to serve.

Good - since you're here, perhaps you'd give an Orthodox opinion on
conversion to Judaism?

Simply put, if a non-Jew embraces Judaism and practices all the tenets of
that faith, does that make him or her 'Jewish'?

I'm not sure where you mean by "here." Do you RFC, or SCJ? Due to
cross-posting, the netiquette of which I've never been too certain, some
of my posts are also showing up at SCJ, where I imagine many people have
already stated opinions about such Jewish matters. And RFC I don't think
it's really the place for such a discussion.

> Simply put, if a non-Jew embraces Judaism and practices all the

Simply answered: Absolutely yes! To be on the safe side, let me
add: And it is a great sin to say otherwise. This is assuming that the
person has done everything the way it is supposed to be done, which I am
assuming because you said "practices all the tenets of that faith."
That's one of the tenets.

We can discuss this further via private e-mail, if you'd like. I'd
prefer not to annoy Usenet posters (or whatever the correct appellation
is -- I hope I have not offended anyone).

Do you really still have to report if you have moved out of state?
That seems unusually stringent and even illegal if you are no longer a
resident.

Again, I have NOT moved out of state yet. My legal status is that I am
traveling away from home on a business contract: I am still a resident
of California. As I mentioned before, I haven't given up my residency
there yet, for several reasons, and for another month or so, I will
officially continue to be a California resident. Thus, I have to
appear for jury duty.

And I have gone over and over this with the superior court clerk. The
only way I can get of this service is to talk with the judge.

Right.

It is my guess that when you tell the judge you are not maintaining a
residence in the area you've been called to serve in, and would
therefore have to pay for a hotel or similar in order to serve,
they will excuse you.

Unless it's Alameda County, in which case you're SOL.

Christine, I don't think you need to worry. Judges routinely excuse
people with excuses such as this. You can also check in online:

And if all else fails, tell 'em you're a practicing Luddite and

Clarify yourself woman. Is a Jew-hater some one who hates Jews or a
Jew that hates? Your use of this language is like that of an Israeli
in his or her 6th year of school. In other words you don't have enough
sense to acquire a paying job on Eretz Israel scrubbing toilets.

Neither story would phase a judge here in Alameda County.

Once during voir dire, I told the court that based on media
publicity of the crime, I believed the accused was guilty (a
true statement on my part, and one probably shared by 90% of the
public), and that was still not sufficient to get me booted off.

I * do*maintain a residence there... How many times do I have to tell
you all that I am still a resident there? I do everything...I maintain
a residence there (a cabin in Idyllwild), I vote there, my car is
registered there, my banking address is there, my mailing address is
there..etc. I have not changed anything to NM at this point, and I
won't for another few months.
When I travel as a travel RN, I am classified as traveling away from
home. I don't "move" from place to place, I travel away from home.
That is why I am eligible for the perks of being a traveler..with tax
free housing. It's all part of the IRS code...

Yes, I am starting to rent a house in NM. But my permanent residence,
until September at least, and maybe til October is still in California.
