Default The Cucumber-Melon Vodka Experiment

As I mentioned just over a week ago, I had a large number of cucumbers. So I
grated them and put them into a pitcher, over which I poured about a fifth
of Skyy melon vodka. I strained out the cucumbers today and poured the
liquid back into the vodka bottle. Even though I'd consumed about half a cup
out of the vodka bottle before the experiment began I ended up with enough
liquid to more than fill the bottle. I put the bottle into the freezer and
put the extra liquid into a small jar, which also went into the freezer.
After about an hour, the liquid in the small jar was slushy, so I took the
vodka bottle out of the freezer. (The bottle is completely full, and I don't
want it to break if the liquid inside freezes.)

I drank the slushy stuff in the jar. It was quite refreshing, but it
benefited greatly from a pinch of salt. Even though the alcohol content
isn't high enough to keep it from freezing, it's still pretty alcoholic. I'm
sure I'll have fun drinking it through the rest of the summer!

Ever tried the watermelon-vodka trick?
1) Cut the top quarter of a big, ripe watermelon
2) rotate it by 90° so to have the hole on a side
3) open a bottle of vodka
4) quickly, drive the bottle's neck into the hole and put the watermelon
standing
5) wait 15 minutes and start spooning it

Especially if it stays as hot as it has been!

How "melony" is Skyy melon vodka? I love melon, but every flavored vodka
I've tried was just too subtle to be worth it. I usually just buy
straight plain vodka and use fruit or veggie juices for the flavoring.

The only reason I had the vodka to begin with was that my grocery store had
it in a "clearance" basket one day, and I thought it sounded interesting.
The reason I undertook this experiment was what you wrote, the melon flavor
was too subtle.

The cucumber infusion seems to have amplified the melon flavor. Initially it
was very muted. Now it's much more forthright. If I wanted to amplify it
further I could always add Torani melon syrup or Midori (both of which I
have).

We were always told to cut a quarter-sized hole, not a quarter of the melon.
Then jam the bottle in and up end it. I think it is called 'plugging a
melon'.......great for family reunions when the kids are playing elsewhere
and those who 'drown if it rained' and 'wouldn't touch the stuff' start
eating the melon and raving about it........'dahling, I need the recipe,
honest' or 'where DO you plant these things'.

Cucumber and vodka don't fit my taste buds. Big flavor clash. Make a funnel
tip size hole in a big, juicy ripe watermellon. Pour cheap vodka into the
funnel in stages until saturated. Chill in fridge. Gets you really hammered
and it tastes good too.
