Default I was away for a time..

I had to do a "format and restore" a few months back.
Did not get right back onto the newsgroups.. including rfc..
Where's the lady who took photos of the food she cooked?
We had discussed and then she cooked cheesecakes and we compared
photos...
Some gave her hell for the looks of her food... but she was a regular
here.. and I miss seeing her food..

Not yet, unfortunately, but it's been a refreshing respite. He's waiting
for a new computer, from what I understand.

Yes, blue plates, and a repetition of a particular vegetable that I can't
remember.

I guess I'm still bleary-eyed this morning. The first time I read the
subject, I read it as "I was awake for a time." :-)

That crossed my mind, but I don't know how someone would think
he was a she, and that he isn't in the US. But, obviously, the blue
plates fit. The odd vegetables fit. Yeah, I think you're right, he's
talking
about Mike.

Don't worry, her docs will just soothingly tell her it's "the voices" and up
her meds. I think we're safe.

Hey, Chuck, where in SC are you? I just moved to Spartanburg.

Blue plates.... That would have been modom, Chuck. She is a "he". His
name is Mike. He posts occasionally these days - I think he is just
"busy"...

Welcome to the area.. The tea IS supposed to be ICED and SWEET
(but usually nasty tea prior to being covered with the sugar..cheap
tea and no one knows how to brew it)
Not all places that claim to cook southern,, do it properly..
Go to "The Beacon" in Spartanburg. Not that the food is special.. just
hearing them shout out the orders,, and them getting them right!
Everyone in a 3 state area has heard about "The Beacon"

I adore Modom. I'd stalk him but I'm far too lazy ;-) Man writes the
best food stuff this side of the ... ummm.... New Jersey divide!

I was in Charlotte this weekend. I fell in love with Max & Erma's. Great
food for a chain! I had the best French Onion Soup (next to mine, of
course!) in over 20 years! Amazing - real broth - not salty boullion thing
and get this, THREE cheeses melted atop... ! Totally delicious!

I've procured a positon up there with my current company and will start as
soon as the house is packed up. <whew, tired just thinking about the rest of
the packing>.

Where's he writing this stuff? I'm not disputing he's a good writer, but
in my opinion, no one wrote better food pieces than Key Hartman used to.
Modom certainly did imaginative food. But not being a Atkins-phile, I
kept thinking a few of them would have been really good with a simple
bit of rice on the side to enjoy with the various flavors.

Kay's writing was wonderful, I agree. But Kay's not here in rfc
anymore. I take the good writing (like Modom and The Ranger) where I
can get it :-)

Another loss, perhaps because of the sheer volume of OT messages, jokes
silly one liner conversations of little interest to more than the 2
folks participating and non-food related musings?
We've lost way too many of the good old contributors due to this stuff,
IMO. Actually not just *my* opinion, I hear it from others also. <sigh>
I hate to see the quality lost when good folks leave...

OBfood: The BEST coffee cake I've ever made. I always use more ginger
than the recipe calls for though.

Pear Ginger Coffee Cake

Recipe By : Penzeys (Early Summer 2003) Catalog
Serving Size : 12 Preparation Time :0:15
Categories : Breakfast Cakes

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups flour -- sifted
1 1/2 cups pears, peeled and diced into 1/4-1/2" cube
1/4 cup cinnamon sugar -- (mixed my own)
2 tablespoons crystallized ginger -- finely chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 9x13 glass pan and set aside.
Stir the baking soda into the buttermilk and set aside
Cream the shortening, salt and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add
the egg and vanilla and mix well.
Alternately add the buttermilk and flour to the mixing bowl, beating
well after each addition.
Fold in the pears and pour into greased pan. Mix together the cinnamon
sugar and chopped cystallized ginger. Sprinkle evenly over the top of cake.
Bake 35-40 min or until a toothpick comes out clean.
